DOCUMENT TITLE : DETERMINATION OF OIL AND GREASE

DOCUMENT NO : KLKOM-III-AM-4.0010 PAGE : 1 of 3

1.0 REFERENCE
APHA 5520

1.0 SCOPE
Applicable to waste water.

2.0 DEFINITION
Dissolved or emulsified oil and grease is extracted from water by intimate contact with an extraction
solvent. This solvent is later removed by evaporation at its boiling point temperature. The remaining
product is the dissolved oil presence in the sample.

3.0 REAGENTS
3.1 Hydrochloric acid, HCI (1+1).
Dilute 50mL of hydrochloric acid with 50mL of distilled water.
3.2 Extraction solvent: Isooctane GR
3.3 Na2SO4, anhydrous.

4.0 APPARATUS
4.1 Separatory funnel, 1L
4.2 Water bath
4.3 Distilling flask
4.4 Filter paper, 11cm Ǿ (Whatman No. 40 or equivalent).
4.5 Glass funnel
4.6 Dessicator

5.0 PROCEDURES
6.1 Preparation of distilling flask;
1. Heat clean flask until dry.
2. Store flask in dessicator until needed.
3. Weigh before use.

6.2 Sample analysis

1. If sample has not been acidified previously, acidify to pH 2 or lower
(generally using 5 ml 1+1 HCl is sufficient).
2. Transfer 100 mL of sample to a separating funnel.
3. Carefully rinse sample container with 30 ml extracting solvent and add solvent washings to
separating funnel.
4. Shake vigorously for 2 minutes.
5. Let layers separate.
6. Drain solvent layer through a funnel containing a filter paper and 10g Na 2SO4 both of which
have been solvent-rinsed into a clean, pre-weigh distilling flask.
7. For sample with <5ml of emulsion, drain only the clear solvent through a funnel with pre-
moistened filter paper and 10g Na2SO4.
8. Recombine aqueous layers and any remaining emulsion or solids in separating funnel.
9. Extract twice more with 30ml solvent each time but first rinse sample container with each
solvent portion.
10. Combine extracts in pre-weighed distilling flask and include final rising of filter paper and
Na2SO4 with an additional 10 to 20ml solvent.
11. Distill solvent from distilling flask in a water bath.
12. When visible solvent condensation stops, remove flask in a water bath. Dry flask in the
oven.
13. Cool in desiccator for 30 minutes and weigh.

7.0 CALCULATION
Oil and Grease (mg/l) = (A-B) 1000 X 1000
V
Where:
A = weight of oil and grease + distilling flask (g)
B = weight of distilling (g)
V = sample volume used, (ml)

8.0 EXPRESSION OF RESULT

Result is express in ppm (mg/L)
