Sorry for taking so long to notice this request. We have spent many happy times in
Dikkili. This is a 2 hour drive north of Izmir and is a Turkish family resort. It is a good
base to explore that part of the coast without being distracted by too many western
Europeans or other Western visitors , except perhaps visiting German Turks. Not far
from Yenifoca, as mentioned in one of the other responses, around Dikkili there are
many local villages with a very authentic feel to them. Bardelmi has a lovely beach
and local fish restaurants abound, particularly good on the road back to Dikkili in the
evening. There are also areas of the coast there which have thermal springs in the
sea which is marvelous for bathing. Denizkoy is another local beach resort where you
will find few westerners but very friendly people and places to eat local food cooked
well. Dikkili has limited amounts of good hotel accommodation , the best being the
Mysia which is a Turkish 4 star, but there is plenty of accommodation to rent if you
prefer, as we do, the freedom that this affords. Nearby is also the town
of Bergama the ancient city of Pergamon which has fascinating remains of an ancient
Asklepion amongst other sites if you feel culturally motivated .On the road to
Bergama is an interesting Spa offering mud baths and spa water treatments at
reasonable cost. You can rent your own pool for the day and the food is good though
music is loud and turkish pop. I'd recommend that you book a car though.Book it in
your country of residence and be warned that renting cars in Turkey is relatively
expensive when compared to many other European countries . Should you ever go
down the coast further to Bodrum the peninsula offers similar delights and we
recommend you visit Gumusluk . Pretty village , good bathing , fab restaurants-
plenty of history too. we have stayed there 4 times at the Hera apartments - the
owner Arif should have finished his army service and be back in harness at the
restaurant by now. the apartments are surrounded by kitchen gardens that are used
to supply the restaurant . Try it but dont tell too many people and spoil it for the rest
of us !.
