Low Temperature at High Elevation & Require Plants to
Exhibit Increased Freezing Resistance throughout the Summer
Month

Introduction:
Freezing temperature can occur throughout the whole year in the alpine life tone of
mountains in the temperature climates. Night frost increases in frequency and more severe during
the growing season as elevation increases.

Summary:
Both evergreen and deciduous species can be found in the alpine life zone of mountains
located in the temperature climate. No difference can be found in the freezing resistance of both
plants during summer month. Leaves of plants growing at their upper elevational range limit
have a higher freezing resistance than the leaves of lower limit.

Evergreen leaves have a higher freezing resistance than deciduous leaves. Elevation had a
statistically significant effect on the freezing resistance of leaves. FR of leaves is less at the start
of growing season. The present-day study demonstrate that elevation had a significant effect on
FR. Significant temporal change in the FR of leaves were detected in summer in all spp. FR is
lower in June than July and august slight frost were recorded at all alpine sites during the
summer of 2017 with the exception of sites of inn valley.
