TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
IN HIGH RISE BUILDINGS
LIFT,ESCALATOR AND MOVING WALKS
WHAT IS LIFT?
A vertical transport equipment that efficiently moves people between
floors (levels, deck) of a building, vessel or other structure.
Generally powered by electric
motor that drive by traction cable and
counterweight systems like a hoist or
hydraulic pump.

Closed Lift (typical type)

Open Lift (bubble type)
LIFT,ESCALATOR AND MOVING WALKS

HYDRAULIC LIFT
A lift where the vertical movement is
done by hydraulic force.
•They use an underground cylinder
•common for low level buildings with 2–5
floors (up to 6–8 floors)
•have speeds of up to 200 feet/minute (1
meter/second)

GLASS LIFT
• Give passengers a visually stimulating
ride between floors.
• The car walls must be constructed with
laminated glass
•The glass lift consist of entrance area and
a viewing area
LIFT,ESCALATOR AND MOVING WALKS

PASSENGER ELEVATORS
Passenger elevators should be located at the circulation core of the building
and be grouped into banks when this is necessary and desirable.

• The required umber of elevators is determined by:

Building type
Building height
Number of stops
Floor use
Passenger volume

GOODS ELEVATORS
Elevator designed to carry goods, rather than
passengers.
Freight elevators are typically larger and capable of
carrying heavier loads than a passenger
elevator, generally from 2,300-4,500 kg.
LIFT,ESCALATOR AND MOVING WALKS

STRECHER ELEVATOR
Strecher elevator also cater to the health sector by
providing specialized range of Stretcher Elevators
suited for application in hospitals, health centers
and other similar places

CAPSULE ELEVATORS

Capsule Elevators act as Architectural highlights on

prestigious buildings. They can be called the
ornaments of a building as they enhance its beauty
and bring life into it
LIFT,ESCALATOR AND MOVING WALKS

AUTOMOBILE ELEVATORS

A car elevator is installed where ramps are considered

space-in conservative.
Car elevators are usually used in parking the vehicles at
different floors, automobile show rooms, automobile
service centers etc.

PANORAMIC ELEVATORS

Panoramic elevators , panoramic lift are designed

basically for malls and other commercials buildings.
It has an overlook over other elevators

• Loading capacity of not less than 544 kg (8
persons).
•Lift landing doors shall have minimum fire
resistance of two hours.
•The lift speed shall be 1.0 m/s or more
•Reachable time to the top floor from the ground (or
entrance) floor within 60 seconds.
LIFT,ESCALATOR AND MOVING WALKS

Machine room-less (MRL) elevators

• Most of the components fit within the shaft containing the elevator car;
and a small cabinet houses the elevator controller. Other than the
machinery being in the hoistway, the equipment is similar to a normal
traction elevator.
• Benefits
• Can operate at faster speeds than hydraulics but not normal traction
• Creates more usable space
 Use less energy (70-80% less than hydraulic elevators)
 Uses no oil
 Slightly lower cost than other elevators
 Units.

SAFETY
• Safety is also major concern in escalator design.
• Fire protection of an escalator floor-opening may
be provided by adding automatic sprinklers or
fireproof shutters to the opening, or by installing the
escalator in an enclosed fire-protected hall.

• To limit the danger of overheating, adequate

ventilation for the spaces that contain the motors
and gears must be provided.
• It is preferred that a traditional staircase be located
adjacent to the escalator if the escalator is the
primary means of transport between floors.

international standard for
inclined moving walks.
• Users find that a 10°
inclination provides the most
comfortable ride. A 12°
inclination is used whenever
the space available is limited.
• Horizontal moving walks can
generally be provided for
inclinations between 0° and
6°.

Moving walkways basic components

LIFT,ESCALATOR AND MOVING WALKS
According To the Flat Moving Surface
Pallet Type
A continuous series of flat metal plates mesh together to form a walkway.
Most have a metal surface, though some models have a rubber surface for
extra traction.

Moving Belt Pallet Type Moving walkways

These are generally built with mesh metal belts or rubber walking surfaces over
metal rollers.

Slow- speed Standard type

half normal walking speed, or 30–40m/min. The slow speed of the walkway causes
impatience, and passengers often walk on the walkway itself or on the adjacent floor
rather use the slower walkway.
High-speed walkways

Using the high-speed walkway is like using any other moving walkway, except that for
safety there are special procedures to follow when joining or leaving.

High-speed walkways
LIFT,ESCALATOR AND MOVING WALKS
• Airports

Moving walkways are commonly used in larger airports, as passengers –

often with heavy luggage in tow – typically need to walk considerable distances.
Moving walkways may be used:

• Museum exhibits
Moving sidewalks may be used:

• to ensure that a museum exhibit is viewed in a certain sequence

• to provide a particular aesthetic effect
• to make sure the crowd moves through at a reliable pace.
LIFT,ESCALATOR AND MOVING WALKS
• Zoos
Similar to museums, some zoological park exhibits have a moving walkway to ease
guests through an animal display or habitat.

Theme parks

Some amusement park rides, such as

continuous-motion dark
rides like Disney's Haunted Mansion, make
use of a moving sidewalk to assist passengers
in boarding and disembarking rides and
attractions. Some examples include:

• Theatre

The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber uses a travelator in the
number 'The Phantom of the Opera' (act one, scene six), to give the illusion the
Phantom and Christine are traveling the catacombs below the Paris Opera House a
great distance to the Phantom's lair on the subterranean lake.

• Public transport
Moving walkways are useful for remote platforms in underground subway/metro
stations, or assisting with lengthier connections between lines, for example:
