Keep the Shake and Spill fun going all year with Shake and Spill
Holiday Shirts!
Nineteen boards and three types of recording sheets will keep your students engaged
throughout the year as they progress to higher and higher numbers up to 10. There are
duplicates for some months to allow flexibility (for example, both Christmas and Hanukkah)
and anticipate holidays, such as Easter, that don’t always fall in the same month. In addition to
practicing composing and decomposing numbers, students will be continuously exposed to
the months of the year!
Shake and Sp
Shake and S
Shake and Sp
Shake and Spill— Shake and Spill is an easy game for practicing number combinations
(composing and decomposing). This skill is absolutely foundational and develops
slowly. This activity, and others that allow students to compose and decompose
numbers, should continue all year long in both Kindergarten and 1st Grade.
Choose a target number for students to use. Differentiate the activity by varying target
numbers based on student need. To play, students put counters equaling the target
number in a cup (we like to use teddy bear counters), shake the cup and spill the
counters on the mat, and then count the number of counters that fall on the shirt and
the number that fall outside the shirt. Students frame their math talk by saying, “There
are 2 counters on the shirt and 3 counters off the shirt. 2 and 3 make 5.” They continue
shaking and spilling to determine other combinations for the number.
Here’s a tip—put the Shake and Spill mat inside something, like the workstation box, to
avoid excess “spillage.”
Recording Sheets
Shake and Spill provides concrete learning for composing and decomposing numbers.
It’s important, however, to connect the hands-on experience with pictorial
representations and symbolic notation (numerals, equations, etc.). The recording sheets
that are included can be used along with the game to make that transition. Three
different recording formats provided even greater flexibility!
This first recording sheet can be used for any target number. While students will likely
shake and spill more than 6 times while playing, they use this sheet to record 6 of their
combinations. Students should draw the counters that fell on the shirt and off the shirt
and then write the corresponding number sentence. This sheet provides
accountability, connects pictorial and symbolic representations to the concrete
learning, and gives students practice writing numbers.
The second recording sheet (shown to the right)
allows students record all of the unique
combinations for 5. For example, 0 and 5, 1 and 4,
2 and 3, 3 and 2, etc. The Holiday Shirts Shake
and Spill unit includes this sheet for all the
numbers from 5 to 10, allowing you to
differentiate—students will be doing the same
activity, but working on different target numbers.
