The Hunger Games Project

Students will read the book “The Hunger Games” novel OR watch The Hunger Games movie and relate the plot to
geography through a project designed to make real world connections to fictional literature.

ALL ITEMS MUST BE FINISHED IN INK, INCLUDE COLOR AND BE COMPLETED ON

PRINTER PAPER (OR NOTEBOOK PAPER IF WRITING BY HAND.)
Connections to Economic Geography – CHOOSE 1 ITEM
Economically each “district” has its own economic function and character. Cite relevant examples from the book/movie
that confirm your understanding.

1. Illustrate the economic activities of the people in District 12 using a 4 Square illustration template. Be sure to
include how this affects their standard of living.
2. Create a meme for the type of economic system the country of Panem operates under.

Connections to Social/Cultural Geography – CHOOSE 1 ITEM Each district in Panem has its own distinct character and
culture much like different countries in the world do today.

1. Create a fake Facebook page (fakebook…ha! Get it?) for a character in the book. (Ask teacher for guidelines)
2. Create a Flyer Advertisement for your favorite Tribute that would be posted in the Capitol during the Games. Use
color. (Ask the teacher for guidelines.)
3. Write a poem or rap to show how 4 of the characters respond to the culture of their region. Think about
assimilation, acculturation, and/or ethnocentrism? Make sure to cite specific examples.

Connections to Political Geography – CHOOSE 1 ITEM

The Hunger Games is a fictional book, but the author’s plot and storyline mimic real world geography concepts. Cite
relevant examples from the book/movie that confirm your understanding.

1. Create an illustration with a caption for the type of government the “Capitol” depicts in the book. Use color in your
illustration.
2. Create a song, poem, journal entry about the injustices for one or more of the underrepresented groups that live in
Panem.
3. Create a political cartoon illustration to depict the experience of citizens in this form of government from the POV
of those in ‘the Seam’/District 12 or ‘the Capitol’. Use color in your illustration.
4. Create a Dossier on one character the government might wish to keep tabs on after the Hunger Games are over
(Katniss, Gale, Cinna, Peeta, Avox, Effie, Caesar, Claudius, etc…) A Dossier is a collection of documents about a
particular person, event, or subject with a photo and information about a character. (Ask the teacher for
guidelines.)
