INTERNAL ASSESSMENT TEST –2

Date :24/04/2018 Max Marks :40 Marks
Subject & Code :Research Methods (17MBA23) Section:Core
Name of faculty :Saravana Krishnan V Time:8:30 – 10:00AM

Note: Answer all questions

1(a) What is snow ball sampling?

 The research starts with a key person and introduce the next one to become a chain

 Make contact with one or two cases in the population (2 marks)

 Ask these cases to identify further cases.

 Used in deep sea divers, Families with triplets, people using walking stick.

(b) Explain in detail the methods of data collection.

• Primary data is original, problem or project specific and collected for the specific objectives and
needs spelt out by the researcher. The authenticity and relevance is reasonably high.
(6 marks)
• Secondary data is information that is not topical or research specific and has been collected and
compiled by some other researcher or investigative body. It is recorded and published in a
structured format.

(c) Explain the probability sampling methods. (8 marks)

1. Random
The purest form of probability sampling
Assures each element in the population has an equal chance of being included in the sample
Random number generators
2. Stratified random
Population is divided into two or more groups called strata, according to some criterion, such as
geographic location, grade level, age, or income, and subsamples are randomly selected from
each strata.
Elements within each strata are homogeneous, but are heterogeneous across strata
3. Cluster
The population is divided into subgroups (clusters) like families. A simple random sample is
taken of the subgroups and then all members of the cluster selected are surveyed.
4. Systematic
Order all units in the sampling frame based on some variable and then every nth number on the
list is selected.

3 Case Study
Mr Mohan Mehta has a chain of restaurants in many cities of northern Indio and was interested in
diversifyinghis business. His only son, Kamal, never wanted to be in the hospitality line. To settle Kamal
into a line which would interest him. Mr Mehta decided to venture into garment manufacturing. He gave
this idea to his son,who liked it very much. Kamal had already done a course in fashion designing and
wanted to do something different for the consumers of this industry. An idea struck him that he should
design garments for people who are very bulky but wont a lean look alter wearing readymade garments.
The first thing that came to his mindwas to have an estimate of people who wore large sized shirts (40
size and above) and large sized trousers (38 size and above).

A meeting was called of experts from the garment industry and a number of fashion designers to discuss
on how they should proceed. A common concern for many of them was to know the size of such a market.
Another issue that was bothering them was how to approach the respondents. It was believed that asking
(8 marks)
people about the size of their shirt or trouser may put them off and there may not be any worthwhile
response. A suggestion that came up was that they should employ some observers of entrances of
various molls and their job would be to look of people who walked into the malls and see whether the
concerned person was wearing a big sized shirt or trouser. This would be a better way of approaching the
respondents. This procedure would help them to estimate in a very simple way the proportion of people
who wore big sizedgarments.

Questions:

(a) Name the sampling design that is being used in the study.
It is given in the case that some observers are employed at the entrance of various malls to see whether a
person entering the mall is wearing a large size shirt or trouser. Naturally the observer will look at the
physical characteristics of the persons and decide whether he is wearing a large size shirt or trouser.

Therefore Judgmental sampling is used in this study.

(b) What are the limitations of the design so chosen?

The limitation of this design could be that there may be differences in the opinion of the investigators
whether a particular person is wearing a large size shirt or trouser. Since we are told that no question is to
be asked to the respondents therefore, a value judgment could play an important role in the sample
selection.

(c) Can you suggest a better design?

This design seems to be the most appropriate design as a convenience or random sample may not
generate subjects that posses such physical attributes.

(d) What method of data collection is being employed?

The method of data collection that is employed in such a case is the observation method as the
investigators are only observing the subjects.
