We use conjunctions to connect words, phrases and sentences. Conjunctions are also called as connecting words. Conjunctions are used to give more information, give alternatives, give reasons, give results or give unexpected information. So, we use them to make our sentences more complex and also more interesting too. 1. And: We use ‘and’ to connect words and sentences. e.g.
The dog is a faithful and intelligent animal.
I like football and hockey.
I like strawberries and bananas.
Anna likes to read and write.
I have one dog and three birds.
2. But: We use ‘but’ to show contrast or the difference between the
two. e.g.
I want to go play, but I am sick.
They rushed to the hospital, but they were too late.
Jill likes oranges, but does not like apples.
3. Or: We use ‘or’ to introduce an alternative. We use ‘or’ to express a
choice or when we give choices. e.g.
Is it Thursday or Friday today?
We can eat salad or vegetables for dinner.
You’re going to have a little brother or sister.
4. So: we use ‘so’ to express result or purpose for something. e.g.
I was feeling hungry, so I made sandwich.
My sister is very smart, so everyone likes her.
I will study every night, so I can pass the test.
5. Because: we use ‘because’ to express a reason for something. e.g.
Annie gets up early, because she goes to bed early
She usually eats at home, because she likes cooking
He went to the hospital, because he hurt his leg.
