2. Biography of the author


Hamka is Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah and is the son of Haji Abdul Karim
Amrullah a prominent Islamic reformer scholar in West Sumatra. Although the
school is only up to grade II of elementary school, but he received a broad
religious education and Arabic and from his father. He was born in 1908 and died
in 1981. The first book published is Under the Protected Ka'ba.
3. Synopsis
                     The sinking of the Van Der Wijck Ship depicts a pure love story
between a young zainuddin and a biologist based on the sincerity and the sanctity
of the soul, which deserves to be a similitude. The story goes back to the strong
customary laws of the heirlooms, in a tribal and institutionalized country, a family
of relatives, and naughty. How is their love story? Can customs and tribes defy the
sanctity of their love? 4. Contents of the Story
Starting from an accidental meeting between Zainuddin and the biological on the
way when it rains down that loving couple's love affair begins. The love
relationship of Zainuddin and Hayati was not approved by the ninik and
mamaknya Hayati. By reason of Zainuddin not tribe and different customs that
they did not approve of it. Zainuddin is considered a child of the Mengkasar by
Minangkabau people even though his father is a native person because his father
married not with his fellow tribe. Similarly in Mengkasar Zainuddin is considered a
man of padang by the citizen because his mother was married to his father who is
an outcast from Minangkabau.
Hayati eventually married Azis's older brother from his best friend Khadijah who
lives in Padang Panjang on the basis of Biological choice and his mamak decision
agreed to accept Azis and reject Zainuddin's proposal. Azis son of people who are
still tribe and bound relatives although far away with mamaknya biological. The
beginning of marriage Hayati and Azis are very happy because Azis is good at
taking and pleasing Biology. But without the knowledge of Hayati, Azis is the type
of youth who like to waste money, gambling, drunk and playful women. Hearing
the marriage and the rejection of the proposal submitted by mail, Zainuddin also
fell ill. The pain is like an insane person who always calls the name of Hayati every
moan. At the request of the doctor and permission from his husband Azis Hayati
finally visited Zainuddin. With an instant the pain immediately healed. After
recovering from illness Zainuddin became a famous writer in the land of Java.
Over time also finally Azis went bankrupt then willing to divorce Hayati for
Zainuddin who has helped him at that time and suicide in a hotel. But Zainuddin
refused to accept Hayati for his revenge against Hayati for the betrayal of Hayati.
Hayati departed home sadly boarded the van Der Wijck ship. The ship sank on the
way but Hayati was rescued. He died after Zainuddin taught him to utter a
shahadah sentence. Zainuddin also died shortly afterwards to endure endless
regret.
5. People and Attitudes
§ Zainuddin: Sweetheart, young man who always suffered from childhood but still
patiently facing the reality of bitter life. Zainuddin was a wise man, patient, and
sometimes childish.
§ Hayati: A strong woman who loves Zainuddin till the end of his life. Hayati is
patient, gentle, and very kind.
§ Mak Base: Zainudin's adoptive parents as well as his mother Zainuddin's salary
are very faithful and kind.
§ Khadija: A Biological Friend who always listens to her friend's complaints.
§ Azis: Husband Hayati, he is a temperament and likes to squander property.
§ Muluk: Zainuddin's friend, a faithful man accompanies his friend in joy and
sorrow.
§ Mande Jamilah: The person whose house is in the zainuddin ride while in
Batipuh (Padang Panjang), he is also one of those who despise Zainuddin because
Zainuddin is neither rich nor famous. § Akhmad: A sister who is very obedient
with her brother.
§ Mak Mak Tengah: Aunt Hayati who really understand the content of his
nephew's heart is in love.
§ Datuk Garang: Greatly admires Minangkabau adat and other low mamanda
adat.
§ His mother Muluk: Very attention to the people who ride in his house.
§ Sutan Mudo: Do not like to insult the customs of others like his other brothers.
§ Swordsman Sutan: Zainuddin's father is a stubborn Head but still able to be
patient in the face of his behavior mamaknya datuk Mantari Labih.
§ Datuk Mantari: Likes to act at will for a treasure that is not hers.
6. Comments (Advantages and Disadvantages)
· Advantages: This book is very touching the hearts of readers. Many teach many
things. One is to always be patient.

· Disadvantages: This book is too much written about Biological letters and
Zainuddin so as to make readers a bit bored to read their letters.

§ The theme of this book is romance. Which tells the love not between Zainuddin
and Hayati.

The mandate to be conveyed is as follows:
§ Always be patient in the face of all trials and sufferings.
§ Whoever does that he will also receive the reward of the deed.
§ Do not be rash in taking a decision.
§ If we want to try earnestly there will be a way.

             a. Religious Value
§ The religious value contained in this book is always remembering God under any
circumstances. Only to God where we ask and complain.

b. Culture value
§ Do not always look down on the tribes and customs of others, because not
necessarily our customs and tribes is better.

             c. Political Value


§ Who is rich and clingy then he has the right to decide and rule.

9. Conclusions
The message the author wishes to convey in this book is very much, the most
important is to always be patient all human soul mate in the hands of God. Every
servant who wants to work will have a way.

This book is less suitable if read by children. Because the language used is a bit
hard to understand. The author uses many Malay languages.s blind everything.
g. Plot
     The path used in this book is a mixed groove because it begins with a climax,
then looks back at the past and ends with a solution.
