COURSE DESCRIPTION

DESCRIPTION: This course begins with an overview of the aging population and
age-related disorders and is integrated into fundamentals of nursing
and social sciences. The adjustment of the gerian to degenerative
changes, nursing home placement, and alternatives to placement in
long term care facilities are discussed. Concepts relevant to
pathophysiology, nutrition, pharmacology, psychosocial
development, and ethical/legal responsibilities are emphasized.
The student practical nurse is taught to use the nursing process to
respond to biological, psychological, and sociological needs of the
healthy gerian. This course is designed to correlate theory and
clinical practice in providing care to the geriatric population.
Community agencies available to the gerian are included for
discussion.

TERMINAL OBJECTIVES: During this course, the student will demonstrate knowledge of the
psychosocial and physiological changes that occur in the aging
process and the nursing actions that can assist the elderly client to
safely adjust to these changes. In the clinical area, the student will
interview a client and write a psychosocial history for that person.
In addition, the student will assess the client and document a
complete physical assessment; pressure sore risk assessment;
discharge planning risk form; and functional assessment.

GRADE ASSIGNMENT: Integrated into grades of fundamentals of nursing, pharmacology,

medical-surgical nursing, and social sciences. Clinical grade will
be satisfactory or unsatisfactory based upon evaluations of nursing
actions and criteria outlined in clinical syllabus.
