GauSort™ sex sorted semen technology:– A step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat

India is the largest producer and consumer of milk in the world with the largest
cattle population. India has a large population of male cattle having low economic
value, which consequently lowers the returns for the dairy farmer. The male
animals compete with the productive animals for the existing scarce feed & fodder
resources. Unproductive cattle damage the crops and also the environment by
releasing greenhouse gases. Unproductive male cattle in the country is a major
challenge which needs to be addressed expeditiously.

Sex Sorted Bovine Semen for Artificial Insemination (AI) is a solution to overcome
this challenge. Till date, this is provided through expensive monopolistic imported
technologies that costs the country close to ₹ 12,000 Crore per year for sorting the
100 Million semen doses annually that is currently being used in India for AI.

NDDB Dairy Services (NDS), a wholly owned subsidiary of National Dairy

Development Board (NDDB) in partnership with Jiva Sciences (P) Ltd, Bengaluru
has developed an effective and low cost Bovine Semen Sex sorting technology
called GauSort™. Jiva Sciences is a Bengaluru based and Indian owned start-up
company which uses technologies licensed from Indian Institute of Science-
Bengaluru, Indian Institute of Technology-Chennai and the Centre for Cellular and
Molecular Platform-Bengaluru.

While the imported technologies to sort the gender of bovine semen were developed
over 10-15 years, the indigenous GauSort™ technology was developed over a
period of 4 years. GauSort™ is a validation of India’s R&D prowess and provides a
low cost solution to Indian farmers at less than 20% of the cost of the imported
technology while at the same time being equally effective and fully scalable to meet
India’s requirements.

It is expected that over the next 2-3 years, India will be fully self-sufficient in sex
sorted bovine semen using GauSort™. This will have exponential benefits on
farmers’ well-being by increasing the milk productivity significantly thereby
preventing the ecological damage by reducing the population of unproductive
cattle in the country.

This technological breakthrough by NDDB Dairy Services and Jiva Sciences is in

alignment with Hon’ble Prime Minister’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’, ‘Make in India’
and ‘Doubling of Farmers’ income’ policy and will usher India to the next level of
breeding technology, where the intersection of Biological and Physical Sciences
would accelerate our advances in these fields without dependency on imported
technologies. Celebrating and talking about this achievement is being ‘Vocal
about Local’.

The prototype GauSortTM sexed semen technology machine has been tested in
Alamadhi semen station of NDS and the first batch of inseminations using the
sexed semen doses have been carried out around Alamadhi and also in
Puducherry. Out of a total number of 65 inseminations, 20 have confirmed
pregnancies with over 30% conception rate and out of 19 confirmed pregnancies
16 have been determined to be female fetus based on ultra- sound testing, which
is about 84.2% purity.

As GauSortTM technology is now proven in the field, NDS is ready for the Product
Launch. The technology will be scaled up and commercial production would start
from 1st of January, 2021. This will revolutionise the Indian dairy sector and
usher in the next White Revolution with immense benefit to the dairy farmers of
the country.
