Social Work Methods
At the end of the topic the students should be able to:

2. Describe social work processes; and
3. Describe social work methods.

Social Work Services

Social Work Services work with individuals having disability and their
families/carers to deal with their social problems in an effective way. It plans
to meet the desired objectives of the service user and his/her family/carer
through assessment, short-term and/or long-term interventions.

The Social Work Services seek to promote the recognition of the person with
disability as a full member of society. In adherence with the Agency's Holistic
and Person-Centred Approach, Social Work Services provide individualised
support services that would enable and empower persons with disability to
realise their vision and enhance their quality of life. Through the
participation and contribution of these persons the whole community is
enriched, and thus Social Workers advocate for and promote such
involvement.

Social Work Services provide the following:

1. Intake: respond to service requests and proceed with the follow-up
plans;
2. Coordination: support persons having disability and their families in
all decision-making processes that affect them and coordinate formal
and informal service provision;
3. Advocacy: provide advocacy services along with, or on behalf of, a
person with disability whose rights to services or opportunities may
actually or potentially be compromised. This service includes
assisting such people to participate in all aspects of community life
(education, employment, recreation, home, social, and more);
4. Screening and Assessment: provide screening and assessment in the
areas of community involvement, social, emotional, educational and
employment;
5. Review: conduct and/or participate in regular reviews to ensure
effective service provision in relation to Agency service users.

Social Work Processes

The social work process comprises a sequence of actions or tasks that draw
on all of the components of practice discussed so far. Although its process is
presented sequentially, it rarely follows a clear linear route and is more often
a fluid, circular cycle whereby workers move from assessment through to
implementation and evaluation and back to assessment again. Despite this
fluidity, some parts of the process, such as assessment, have clearly defined
procedures guided by local or national policy. Some tasks may be fairly short
and discrete, but many are longer term and more complex, such as
assessments. You will also find that tasks often overlap and are revisited over
a period of involvement with a service user.

Developing an understanding and awareness of the social work process is

one of the prerequisites for becoming a ‘reflective’ practitioner. Reflection
refers to the ability to work in a thoughtful and systematic way. Practitioners
need to be aware (and inform service users) of why they are engaged in
particular tasks and to be able to justify their methods of working.
Interventions should be meaningful and fit within an overall plan or strategy.
Awareness of the different stages of the social work process can assist social
workers to prepare for, carry out and evaluate their interventions in order to
both be accountable for, and reflect upon, their actions.

Social Work Methods

A method is well understood to be an orderly way of procedure and

therefore it is always carried out towards achievement of a specific aim.
Social work methods is such method that social workers use to help people of
all ages and from various sections of society to enhance their social
functioning and to cope more effectively with their problems. Social workers
don’t pick and choose what problems and issues they would like to address.
They see a problem even a very difficult problem, and try to help people
solve it. They must prepare themselves to help people with individualized
personal problems on the one had and very broad problems that affect whole
organizations and communities on the other. This article throws lights on
enhancing team functioning utilizing and practicing social work methods for
team building and enhancing team climate for better team effectiveness. This
paper focus the area of team functioning same as social or group functioning
how social work method can be utilize for organization development through
social administration, social welfare, social change and action for better team
functioning and team effectiveness.
