STATEMENT OF INTEREST

Civil Engineering

What inspires me about engineering is that it touches so many aspects of our lives. The roads we travel
on, the vehicles on them, bridges, motorways and homes are all products of engineering and design.
Subspecialties such as electronic engineering have become vast areas of study, research and
achievement in their own right, producing all the modern gadgets that we take for granted such as
mobile phones, computers, telecommunications and the internet. The prospects for combining a
thorough grounding in the science of engineering with elements of design and creativity really appeal to
me and I would like to forge a career in which I can make a lasting difference.

One of my heroes is Isambard Kingdom Brunel. He was way ahead of his time, working as a modern
engineer before it was really considered a serious scientific discipline. His vision to build the Great
Western Railway and then enable it to link up to North America via the first even propeller-powered iron
ships was revolutionary. It is possible to gain great insights into modern engineering by looking at the
great works done by engineers in the past as well as contemporary specialists. This is a fast moving field
and the first half of the 21st century should see massive changes. Just thinking about what was possible
40 years ago and what is possible now, I am very keen to be part of that continuing evolution during my
career as an engineer.

I believe my strengths lie in mathematics. I have been taking extra math classes that have improved my
organization and problem-solving skills. Trigonometry is the area that I enjoy especially because of the
challenge of solving problems that incorporate identities, algebraic methods, and trigonometric
properties. I chose physics because of its link to engineering and over time I genuinely started to
appreciate the subject for its logical reasoning. My mathematical understanding of physics is enhanced
by choosing the Mechanics Module. I engaged greatly with the simple harmonic motions topic, more
specifically how resonance can affect bridges. Last year I visited the CERN labs in Russia, where my
passion for physics flourished. This enlightening experience furthered my knowledge of physics and
allowed me to communicate with world-leading scientists. The engineering required to build the particle
accelerator is truly inspiring and showcased how broad the engineering industry is.

Right from my childhood I have recognized myself have a great entice towards the field of mathematics
and general science. During my higher secondary education, I showed in mathematics and science and in
order to supplement the education that I received In school, I became habitual eager of science
magazines and books. As a direct consequence of this I came to know of the latest development in the
science and engineering. Also, the study of physic and chemistry throughout my undergraduate studies
has enabled me to develop my interest further, for my physics coursework I researched the area of the
fluid flow, which I immensely enjoyed. I am aware that fluid flow plays an important part in the civil
engineering industry and this was an area which was touched upon during my three months placement
at a local engineering company and I was involved in a number of project led the head engineer.
University of Saskatchewan could be an ideal platform to realize my aspirations. In my opinion, the
University with its commendable research facilities and renowned faculty will provide me with a suitable
environment to pursue graduate studies in civil engineering and construction. By providing me with
ample opportunity for acquisition of knowledge and a concurrent process of self-discovery, I am sure the
graduate program will groom me to conducting independent research and serve as a launch pad for a
research career either in the industry or the academia.

Outside engineering I have a passion for football, competing at home in the regional championship
matches as goal keeper. I like the unique position of goalie as it feels good to be such a lynchpin for the
whole team. Although a match can involve being out of play much of the time, I maintain a high level of
fitness. I belong to my local Athletics Club and my special event is the 400 meters hurdles. I have taken
part in several charity events to raise enough to start building a new athletics track.

I have stayed in Ukraine for five years and I have witnessed first-hand the extreme difference between
the traditional, rural way of life, with few mechanized or engineered tools, with the expansion and
development of the city itself. Eastern Europe is still in a phase of active growth, despite the global
recession and my desire to study in the Canada is also motivated by my interest in other European
cultures. Experiencing university life and living. I am reliable, trustworthy, hardworking and sociable. My
analytical skills are strong and I have much initiative as well as enjoying working in a team. I am fully
aware of the high level commitment and perseverance required for postgraduate studies, and I believe
my aptitude, dedication and motivation will see me through the challenge. I look forward to a favorable
decision regarding an admission. Thank you immensely for considering my application.
