MAT 510 – Homework Assignment

Homework Assignment 1

Due in Week 1 and worth 30 points

One of my hobbies is cleaning the car; in my teenage years, I used to clean the two vehicles

owned by my family. My Dad enjoyed doing it; I guess that where I got the interest. I usually

wash my car after two days or during the weekend. The activity helps me to relax and do

physical exercise to remain healthy. However, the activity is not always sweet during the cold

season especially in December due to temperature. The activity is more enjoyable during the

summer period since it helps me to keep fresh.

Answer the following questions in the space provided below:

1. How many steps did it take you to complete the activity?

Cleaning cars requires seven steps to complete the task. The steps include;

parking the car in the shade, rinsing the car to remove the loose dirt, applying the

detergent, pumping water to remove the remaining dirt, rinsing and drying the car, feeling

the surface to remove contaminants from the car surface and finally waxing to make the

car look shiny.

2. What time did each step take, and how much time was delayed between steps?

Cleaning cars usually take one hour and mostly depend on the condition of the

car. Besides, the vehicle is typically dirty during the summer period compared to the

winter period due to dust.

3. What was the average time between steps?

MAT 510 – Homework Assignment

On average, the time between the steps is not more than 10 minutes. The time

between one stage to another may not be equal in most cases since some activities are

interconnected.

4. What was the average time each step took?

On average each step takes 9 minutes to complete, but improving my activity each

step does not take more than 5 minutes

5. Differentiate the main actions between doing and improving your activities.

Comparing my performance of the same task when I was a teenager, I have

improved since I take less time to clean one car. When I was a teenager it took me 2

hours to clean one car. Over time I have learned how to do some tasks with a heist. I

usually try to improve my time spent on cleaning one car, and over time, the time spent

has drastically decreased.

6. Determine the overall manner in which variation has affected your activities.

As mentioned above, the time taken to clean the car depends on the number of

factors. During the winter season, the cleaning takes less time as compared to the

summer season. During the weekend, when I have enough time, I usually take more

time since I enjoy the activity. Lastly, the time spent depends on my mood, when I

am tired, it takes me less time to finish the task since I only clean important parts

compared to when I have my mood. The factors that affect the time I take in cleaning

the car are the variation for the activity.
