What is It

What is a cleaning agent?

A cleaning agent refers to a substance, which can be either naturally
occurring or synthetically formulated, with the specific purpose of cleansing
surfaces. These agents contain active ingredients that enable them to
effectively remove dirt, stains, and unwanted odors. Moreover, cleaning
agents often possess disinfectant properties, allowing them to combat and
eliminate microorganisms like bacteria and fungi.
Why use cleaning agents?
The utilization of cleaning agents serves a multifaceted purpose in
maintaining cleanliness, enhancing visual appeal, eradicating unpleasant
odors, and mitigating the potential spread of contaminants. Certain cleaning
agents have the dual capability of not only cleaning surfaces but also
disinfecting them, offering a valuable layer of protection against harmful

4 SDOIN_Core_Q3_PhysicalScience11_Module8
pathogens. In addition, some specialized agents, known as degreasers, are
equipped with organic solvents that facilitate the breakdown of oils and fats,
making them indispensable in various cleaning scenarios.
How are cleaning agents classified?
Cleaning agents are systematically categorized based on their pH
levels, typically falling into three main categories: acidic, neutral, or alkaline.
The pH, representing "potential hydrogen," measures the propensity of an
agent to introduce hydrogen molecules when mixed with water. This
classification system aids in selecting the most suitable cleaning agent for a
particular cleaning task, ensuring optimal effectiveness and desired
outcomes.

Figure 1: The pH scale with their example represented compound

Source: Anne Helmenstine, The pH Scale of Common Chemicals,
https://sciencenotes.org/the-ph-scale-of-common-chemicals/.

All cleaning agents are given a rating on the pH scale that goes from
zero (most acidic) to 14 (most alkaline). In the center, at seven on the scale,
is water. Cleaners like detergent are more alkaline and fall somewhere
around 10 or 11 on the pH scale, while acids like white vinegar or lemon fall
closer to two.

Types of Cleaning Agents
Water, surprisingly, stands as one of the most fundamental cleaning
agents, serving as a universal solvent. Its ability to dissolve minerals, break
down fats, and oils makes it an essential component in cleaning. However,
the cleaning product market offers a diverse range of options, typically
falling into four primary categories.
These four main types of cleaning agents are acidic, alkaline, neutral,
and degreaser formulations. They come in various forms like powders,
liquids, and sprays, and are commonly found in household cleaning
products.
Understanding these cleaning agent categories enables homeowners
to make informed choices when tackling various cleaning tasks around the
house, ensuring optimal cleaning results.
1. Acidic Cleaning Agents
Acids, with their lower pH levels, are adept at dissolving mineral
deposits and revitalizing metals. They are particularly useful for tasks that
involve brightening up surfaces.
Examples: Muriatic acid, lemon juice, vinegar
2. Alkaline Cleaning Agents
On the opposite end of the pH spectrum, alkaline cleaners have
higher pH levels and are designed to break down fats, oils, and proteins
typically found in dirt, organic matter, and bodily fluids. This makes them
effective for removing stubborn stains.
Examples: Laundry detergent, bleach, borax, baking soda
3. Neutral Cleaning Agents
Neutral cleaners, maintaining a balanced pH, are ideal for surface
dust and debris removal. While they lack strong cleaning chemicals, their
gentle nature makes them suitable for everyday cleaning tasks.
Examples: Water, Dish soap (which comes closest to being a neutral
cleaner)
4. Degreasers
Degreasers, similar to alkaline cleaners, excel in breaking down oils,
fats, and petroleum-based residues. They find wide application, from
construction settings to cleaning kitchen appliances, hard surfaces, and
floors. Degreasers play a pivotal role in facility maintenance routines.
Examples: Dishwashing liquids, detergents
