Medicine 1 – Patient and Doctor Relationship

The Gifted Hands

From the title of the movie itself, I already assumed that this movie will going to be about a
protagonist who is amazingly and out of this world intelligent ever since he/she was born but I guess I
was wrong. This movie depicts about a young boy who had nothing but his ever so caring mother and an
older brother. The boy was not intelligent at first, he got failing marks and was bullied by his classmates
from time to time until his mother made him and his brother to read books every week to hone up their
skills in reading. The boys began to love reading and had acquired knowledge they never even imagined
to have. The young boy by the name of Ben got high grades and ranked number one in his class but
despite of his astounding achievements, he was still ridiculed just because of his color. Growing up, Ben
made friends that made him become violent that even his mom couldn’t tame him down.

The turning point would that instance wherein Ben nearly killed a boy because of anger. That
memory became his reason to become better and be a Physician. Even in Medical school, he still had
hurdles in becoming a doctor but what keeps him going is his mother and his newfound love. After
Medical school, he began his residency at well known hospital which is his breakthrough. He became
one of their best doctors that operated in various of complicated cases but he had overcome it all. He
became the neurosurgeon he’d hoped to become.

Ben Carson’s life became my inspiration as I take on this Medical Journey. I had my downs, more
of failures than success and more worthless sleepless nights but I guess becoming a doctor entails being
strong despite the circumstances and to be brave like Ben. He is a living proof that success can’t be
acquired overnight but it is through hard work and perseverance. He was ridiculed and put down by
many but he had overcome it all.

It also made me realize how important reading is. I’ve always been a bookwork ever since
however I was more indulged in novels and stories than educational books. Truly the gift of reading
could take you to places and eventually change your life like what happened to Ben. Through books, he
made his way to the top and most importantly he acquired knowledge that will be beneficial for him.

His story inspired me in many ways possible as a medical student. I know that one day these
hardships that I am in now will eventually be replaced with an MD after my name and I can’t wait to
witness that moment. This profession that I chose to enter is a miracle not only to myself but to my
future patients that will be under my care. The line of Ben’s mother “You can do whatever others can do
but you can only do it better” will forever be engraved in my heart. I will not give up on this profession
because if others can do it I can do it too except that I can push harder to be better. In that note, I
should read and study more like Dr. Ben Carson to become a full pledged Physician someday.

His faith with the Almighty also touched me because in dealing with the lives of every individual,
only God can really heal them, us Physicians are only the instruments of God to heal his people. I loved
how he dedicated his work to God and in turn he helped families by operating children with complicated
cases that no one dared to look into. He challenged the impossible by using the miracle “his brain” and
faith in God. He operated on a Craniopagus twins which is very risky but he had successfully operated
them.

Dr. Ben’s story will live up for generations because of his service and in time I would also want to
be remembered as a Doctor who helped so many people. This passion in me to become a physician
someday will always fire up through the help of my family, friends and future patients. Truly, “You can
do whatever others can do, only you can do it better” will live up in me till I finish Medical School.
