SMART WIRELESS NOTICE BOARD DISPLAY AND VOICE ALERT SYSTEM USING RASPBERRY PI

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

In today’s world of connectedness, people are becoming accustomed to easy access to

information. Whether it’s through the internet or television, people want to be informed and
up-to-date with the latest events happening around the world. Sharing information is the main
motto of any communication technology. In our day-today life, we are using many notice
boards in home, office and public places like airport, bus stands, hospitals etc. Notice Boards
are an important medium for displaying information and keeping people informed. The
traditional notice boards involve the pinning up of printed or handwritten information on a
board. But this has the disadvantages of dependency on a person for pinning up notices and
wastage of paper. Some developments in notice boards, in an attempt to overcome above-
mentioned drawbacks, include display of data on a screen using wireless communication.

1.1 SCOPE

The Raspberry Pi is a low cost, credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer
monitor or TV, and uses a standard keyboard and mouse. It is a capable little device that
enables people of all ages to explore computing, and to learn how to program in languages
like Scratch and Python. It’s capable of doing everything which can be done by desktop
computer, such as browsing the internet and playing high-definition video, to make spread
sheets, word-processing and playing games.

In today’s world of connectedness, people want to be informed and updated with the
latest events happening around the world. Notice boards are an important medium for
displaying information and keeping people informed. In our day-today life, we are using
many notice boards in home, office and public places like airport, bus stands etc. The
traditional notice boards involve the pinning up of printed or handwritten information on a
board. But this has the disadvantages of dependency on a person for pinning up notices and
wastage of paper. Developments in notice boards, in an attempt to overcome above-
mentioned drawbacks, which includes display of data on a screen, voice alert system and
informing through SMS using wireless communication. We use GSM network so that the
notice can be sent from practically any location on the globe and it will be displayed on the

screen. Notice Board is used in various institutes to display notices and these boards are
managed manually. It is a long process to put up notices on the notice board. This wastes a lot
of resources like paper, printer ink, man power and also loss of time. In this paper we have
proposed a system which will enable people to wirelessly transmit notices on notice board
using Wi-Fi.

1.2 OBJECTIVES
 To develop a Wireless Notice Board that Display Message Sent from the User.
 To develop voice alert system for the announcement of notices.
 To send notice as a message to different users mobile number.
 To reduce the human effort, paper work, printer ink and cost for manual changing of
the notices.
 To design simple and User friendly system that helps user to keep track of notice
board every day.
 To interface in a public addressing system.

1.3 PROBLEM DEFINITION

Notice board is primary thing in any institution/organization or public utility places

like bus station, railway station and parks etc. The notice boards are being handled manually
in many applications. In order to put up notices on the board lot of resources such as paper,
printer ink are wasted and in addition it consumes a lot of time to make notification. Pinning
up of printed/handwritten notices on a board also creates dependency on a person to pin up
notice.
To overcome above mentioned drawbacks we are proposing a system which is low
cost and energy efficient. The proposed system is wireless electronic notice board which
employs Raspberry Pi controller to receive notices and displays on LCD. System also
announces notices using speaker. The notices are also sent to authorized users mobile
numbers.

1.4 EXISTING SYSTEM

 To avoid manual pinning up of notice, electronic wireless notice board has been
implemented
 Raspberry pi 3 is used as microcontroller, it is third generation raspberry pi
 Linux based operating system is implemented.
 Notice is displayed on desktop screen.
 Cell phone is used to send the notice as message using GSM technology.
 The notice sent is also obtained in the form of speech through interfaced speakers

1.5 PROPOSED SYSTEM

 The main objective of our project system is to develop a wireless notice board that
displays the message on an output LCD display sent from the user and to design a
simple, easy to install, user friendly system.
 Raspberry Pi Zero W is used as microcontroller to interface the devices.
 Rasbian OS is implemented which supports Python language to run the raspberry pi
 VNC viewer is installed and used as server/client mechanism.
 LCD screen is used to display notice. The screen is of 18.5in and resolution of
1366*768 pixels.
 By using system, notice is typed and sent to the raspberry pi.
 Speaker is used to obtain voice alert regarding new notice.
 Notice is also sent as mail to different users email ids which will be pre-provided in
the code.

1.6 METHODOLOGY

The notice to be displayed is sent as a Mail. This makes it immune to noise. Also, Wi-
Fi networks are relatively free of errors. This mail is received and this mail is sent to the
Raspberry Pi by Wi-Fi at regular interval of time. This is done by the means of establishing
serial communication between the Raspberry Pi and Wi-Fi

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING, BCE, SHRAVANABELAGOLA 3

SMART WIRELESS NOTICE BOARD DISPLAY AND VOICE ALERT SYSTEM USING RASPBERRY PI

The mail is transmitted by Wi-Fi. The Raspberry Pi after decoding the received data
sends it to the display. The Raspberry Pi has two video output options – composite (Radio
Corporation of America - RCA) and High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI). HDMI
OUT of the Raspberry Pi is connected to the Display screen. The operating system used in
Raspberry Pi is Raspbian and the programming language used for Raspberry Pi is Python.
The system includes Python coding which is done on Raspberry Pi for the generation of
speech signal based on the user defined input text. A simple File Accessing Protocol (FAP) is
adapted to achieve the task of retrieving the audio files on the database.

Speech synthesisation can be performed in number of ways one of them is Unit

Selection Synthesis which provides with more naturalness and efficiency based on that unit is
used like phoneme, diphone, syllable etc. A text-to-speech system was developed for
converting Thai text to speech (TTTS). The TTTS consists of four modules including that
text, text processing, dictionary, lookup and speech synthesis

Here we have also developed system to work for notice announcement, hence the
speakers are connected as audio output. An audio amplifier circuit is used to enhance the
volume through Raspberry Pi. The power requirement of the Raspberry Pi board is 10 watt,
and it is regulated DC. Digital notice board receives the message from authorized user and
displays it on LCD which is situated at remote location, at same time this message will be
sent to different users mobile numbers that are stored in microcontroller memory.

This project saves time, energy and hence environment. Cost of printing and
photocopying is also reduced as information can be given to a large number of people from
our fingertips. The system has capable to give the output in audio as well as a visual output.

The main aim of this proposed paper is to drastically reduce the cost service, this
project achived by using computer/laptop as a transmitter, Raspberry PI 3 model B as a
receiver, Wi-Fi for data transmission and LED/LCD screen as a display. Wireless Fidelity
(Wi-Fi) is a technology that allows electronic devices to connect to a wireless LAN (WLAN)
network, mainly using the 2.4 gigahertz (12 cm) UHF and 5 gigahertz (6cm) SHF ISM radio
bands. A WLAN is usually password protected, but may be open, which allows any device
within its range to access the resources of the WLAN network. The Wi-Fi Router is shown
below Wi-Fi provides higher data rates for multimedia access as compared to both Zigbee
and Bluetooth, where authorized user sent the message to Rasberry pi board using Wi-fi,
required SD card stores the sent message in Rasberry pi, then sent message will be displayed
on LED/LCD display. When both the transmitter and receiver are connected to the same
network, then the notices are displayed on the monitor. Recent versions of Raspbian have
been based on Debian Wheezy, but Raspbian has now been updated to the new stable version
of Debian which is called Jessie.

conventional Analog type notice board with digital notice board one can make information
dissemination much easier in a paperless community. Here the admin can control notice
board through internet. So information can be send anywhere in the world and can be
displayed within seconds. Information may be in the form of text, image, pdf etc. PC is used
for sending information and Raspberry pi is connected to internet at the receiving side. In
addition to this an application which is installed on the administrator mobile phone can serve
the same purpose. This application also contains a speech to text converter .So the admin can
send text messages through his/her own voice. In this paper Internet of things, raspberry pi
are used to implement the system.

Information has to be updated in a notice board, it has to be done manually. Only a single
notice can be sent to all of the notice boards irrespective of their place, in order to overcome
this disadvantage, multiple displays along with a decoder are used to select a particular
display. The corresponding information is sent through an ARM controller by using GSM
technology. The monitoring system consists of an image sensor which captures the images
and the images can be transferred through an USB port to a PC for storage purposes. In this
paper LPC2148, GSM, e-notice board, Monitoring system are used.

display

A liquid-crystal display (LCD) is a flat-panel display or other electronically modulated

optical device that uses the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals. Liquid crystals do
not emit light directly, instead using a backlight or reflector to produce images in color or
monochrome. LCDs are available to display arbitrary images (as in a general-purpose
computer display) or fixed images

Specifications

 Resolution The resolution of an LCD is expressed by the number of columns and

rows of pixels (e.g., 1024×768). Each pixel is usually composed 3 sub-pixels, a red, a
green, and a blue one.

 Spatial performance: For a computer monitor or some other display that is being
viewed from a very close distance, resolution is often expressed in terms of dot pitch
or pixels per inch, which is consistent with the printing industry.

 Temporal performance: the temporal resolution of an LCD is how well it can

display changing images, or the accuracy and the number of times per second the
display draws the data it is being given. LCD pixels do not flash on/off between
frames, so LCD monitors exhibit no refresh-induced flicker no matter how low the
refresh rate.

 Color performance: There are multiple terms to describe different aspects of color
performance of a display. Color gamut is the range of colors that can be displayed,
and color depth, which is the fineness with which the color range is divided.

 Brightness and contrast ratio: Contrast ratio is the ratio of the brightness of a full-
on pixel to a full-off pixel. The LCD itself is only a light valve and does not generate
light; the light comes from a backlight that is either fluorescent or a set of LEDs.

Working principle

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING, BCE, SHRAVANABELAGOLA 15

Figure 3.3: LCD working

LCD is combination of two states of matter that is solid and liquid. LCD works on
the principle of blocking light. LCD uses a liquid crystal to produce a visible image. Liquid
crystal display is composed of several layers which include two polarized panel filters and
electrodes. Light is projected from a lens on a layer of liquid crystal. The combination of
colored light with the grayscale image of the crystal forms a colored image. Then the image
is displayed on screen.

3.3 Speaker

Figure 3.4: Speaker

Speaker is an electronic device which converts an electrical audio signal into a

corresponding sound. The speakers receive audio input from a device such as a computer or
an audio receiver.

Specifications:

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING, BCE, SHRAVANABELAGOLA 16

SMART WIRELESS NOTICE BOARD DISPLAY AND VOICE ALERT SYSTEM USING RASPBERRY PI

Rated power: Speaker can handle nominal (or even continuous) power and also peak (or
maximum short-term) power.

Impedance: Speaker has typically 4ohms, 8ohms.

Baffle or enclosure type: Speaker is Sealed or bass reflex.

Frequency response: Speaker includes variance limit of frequency, such as within

+ or – 2.5dB.

Sensitivity: Speaker sensitivity is specified in dB and measured at 1meter with an input

1watt.

Working Principle

Speakers are made up of a cone, an iron coil, a magnet and housing (case). When
the speaker receives electrical input from a device, it sends the current through the causing it
to move back and forth. This motion then vibrates the outer cone, generating sound waves
picked up by the receiving device.

4.2 Python

Python is an interpreted, high-level, general-purpose programming language. Python

has a design philosophy that emphasizes code readability using significant whitespace. It
provides constructs that enable clear programming on both small and large scales. Python
features a dynamic type system and automatic memory management. It supports multiple
program paradigms, including object-oriented, imperative, functional and procedural, it also
has a comprehensive standard library.

Python works on different platforms such as Windows, Mac, Linux and Raspberry Pi.
Python has syntax that allows developers to write programs with fewer lines than some other
programming languages. Using Python enables quick prototyping. Python uses new lines to
complete a command. Python relies on indentation, using whitespace, to define scope such as
the scope of loops, functions and classes.

Python is used on a server to create web applications. It is also used alongside

software to create workflows. Python can be connected to database systems to read and
modify files. Python handles big data and performs complex mathematics.

4.3 VNC Viewer

In computing, virtual network computing (VNC) is a graphical desktop-sharing

system that uses the remote frame buffer protocol (RFB) to remotely control another
computer. It transmits the keyboard and mouse events from one computer to another, relaying
the graphical-screen updates back in the other direction, over a network.

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING, BCE, SHRAVANABELAGOLA 19

SMART WIRELESS NOTICE BOARD DISPLAY AND VOICE ALERT SYSTEM USING RASPBERRY PI

Figure 4.2: VNC Viewer

VNC is platform-independent, there are clients and servers for many GUI-based
operating systems. Multiple clients can be connected to VNC server at the same time. The
VNC client is the program that represents the screen data originating from the server,
receives updates from it, and presumably controls it by informing the server of collected local
input.

VNC is compatible with any operating system. Computers are networked with TCP/IP
and should have open ports allowing traffic from the IP addresses of devices which are
connected to VNC viewer.

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING, BCE, SHRAVANABELAGOLA 20

Figure 4.3: Window pops up with Rasbian icon

The VNC protocol is based on transmitting graphic primitive from server to client and
event messages from client to server. VNC viewer is installed on a local computer and
connects to the server component, which must be installed on the remote computer.

The server transmits a duplicate of the remote computer’s display screen to the
viewer. It also interprets commands coming from the viewer and carries them out on the
remote computer.

512MB of RAM, 40-pin header. Pi zero w also includes 802.11n Wi-Fi and bluetooth 4.0.

Raspberry Pi Zero Wis interfaced with LCD display, Speaker and it is also used to
send notice as mail to authorized users mail ids. Using VNC viewer access is obtained
through raspberry pi. Raspbian OS is used to write Python code and the code is dumped into
the Raspberry Pi.

Notice is typed using application window and sent into the raspberry pi, then the
notice is displayed, obtained as voice alertness and also notice is sent as mail.

LCD display: A liquid-crystal display is a flat-panel display and it uses the light modulating
properties of liquid crystals. Liquid crystals do not emit light directly, instead it uses reflector
or backlight to produce images in color or monochrome.

In this project we are using screen size of 18.5in, display resolution of 1366*768
pixels, aspect ratio of 16:10 display screen in order to display the notice through LCD screen.
LCD screen is interfaced to Raspberry Pi Zero W through HDMI port.

Power supply: System is provided with 230volts, 50 Hz AC supply. The raspberry pi is

connected to the system adapter. Power requirement of Raspberry Pi Zero W is 5V 2A.

Speaker: Speaker is electronic device which converts electrical signals into corresponding
sound waves. Speaker is interfaced to Raspberry Pi Zero Wand outputs voice alert regarding
arrival of new notice when it is enabled.

Sending mail: Code is also written to send notice as mail to different users mail ids. This
function is carried out by raspberry pi microcontroller. Raspberry pi uses Wi-Fi network to
mail the notice to authorized users mail ids.

5.2 FLOW CHART

Notice boards are used in different types of organizations for communication

purposes. Using notice board is an effective way for displaying information and to
communicate with people. Changing different notice day by day is difficult process and
consumes more time.

To overcome this problem, here is the project which deals with an innovative wireless
notice board. The main objective of this project is to design a notice board that displays
various notices sent from the system through LCD display.
