of human society are constantly changing. This book is an introduction to the concepts and methods of dichronic linguistics, exploring the change of language over time. It covers all areas of historical linguistics, presenting concepts in a clear and concise manner. Examples are given in a variety of languages, with
particular emphasis on the languages of Australia and the Pacific. While the needs of linguistics students have been firmly in mind, the book will also be of interest to the general reader seeking to understand langauge and language changes. Several new sections have been written for this fourth edition, including many
new issues and several datasets. Existing materials have been supplemented with new sections on grammar, tone, morphological changes and the use of statistical methods in language classification. However, I will review the fourth edition because it covers many
areas compared to the third edition. I must point out that Terry Crowley is the sole author of the third edition, while Terry Crowley and Claire Bauern are the authors of the fourth edition. Content: Chapter 1: Introduction First Chapter introduces the reader to the nature of language relations, as well as to the ideas of langu
and parole Ferdinand de Sossur. The concepts of dichronia and synchronicity are covered. The concept of proto-langeja, the family tree and various causes of language change, including anatomy, ethnicity, climate, geography, substrate, local identification, functional needs, simplification and structural pressures are
considered. Finally, a brief description of the relationship to language change is covered. Chapter 2: Sound Change TypesCrow and Bauern are now turning to different phonological processes regarding sound change. They mainly covered laziness, strength, loss of sound, addition of sound, metathesis, fusion, division,
destruction, assimilation, disunity and change of tone. Chapter 3: Expression of sound changes The third chapter begins with the difference between the resulting change and the unconditional changes. The relevant mathematical rules are then introduced to illustrate the sound changes. The order of the rules, which
demonstrates the order of sound changes, is covered. These rules allow readers to translate sound changes and their chronological order. Chapter 4: Phonetic and Phonetic ChangeThe authors briefly present concepts of phonetic and phonetic changes in addition to examples. This chapter illustrates the interaction
between these two types of sound changes. Chapter 5: Comparative Method (1): ProceduresComparation Method is a widely used tool among historical linguists. The comparative method is highly trusted and practiced despite the proliferation of new methods related to computer programming. Sound correspondence
and their role in reconstruction are covered. An example is the method method to the proto-Polynesian method. After that, a brief description of the concept concept conditional sound changes are provided. The reality of the concept of protolange is discussed very briefly at the end of the chapter. Chapter 6: Definition of
kinshipThis chapter turns to the process of finding families and subgroups. General innovation is a sign of language change, while joint retention is not. The idea of long-distance protolanges is applicable through two processes: the comparison of proto-lange and mass comparison. Because the concept of protolange is
abstract, not real (i.e. no one can drill saying that one day it was said about this protolange, As for the mass comparison, as it is based on the relaxation of strict comparison, it will not have accurate results due to the inability to distinguish cognacs. When a comparative method cannot be applied because the language
has no relatives; When a comparative method cannot reveal sufficient information because the language is very remotely related to protolange; when the necessary information includes changes that have occurred between the reconstructed language and the proto-Lange. The authors provide instructions in terms of the
application of internal reconstruction. Chapter 8: Computational and Statistical Methods Differences between Innovative and Remote Methods are very briefly covered. The first concerns sound correspondence, and the second - the relationship between daughters. The concept of lexicostatistics is included along with
such concepts as the main vocabulary and subgroups. In addition, the influence of biology on historical linguistics is clear through borrowing terminology and methodologically similar applications. Chapter 9: Comparative Method (2): History and ChallengesThe authors enter a very brief historical sketch of the appearance
of a comparative method. There are problems in terms of application. For example, it is not easy to eliminate borrowing words. In addition, an uncoordinated change in sound is difficult to assign to its original correspondence. The opinion of a non-gramarian, who claims that sound changes are regular and systematic, is
included. The difference between the wave model and the lexical diffusion is covered. Chapter 10: Morphological changesThis chapter makes changes relevant to the morphological structure. There are some important aspects that include morphological changes; for example, allomorphic changes, boundary changes,
doubling and reinforcement. In addition, morphological changes are applied to the order of morphs. The analogy is another morphological process that leads to change - it has three types: change in meaning, analog change in shape, and analog extension and alignment. The methods and tools of morphological
reconstruction are considered. Chapter 11: Semantic and Lexical Changes Semantic Categories, such as Improvement, Pejoration, Expansion, Narrowing, Bifurcation and Shift, are covered. Some semantic processes influence the concept of monodirection - such processes include metaphor, euphemism, hyperbole,
interference, folk etymology and hypercorrection. This chapter includes the fact that lexical changes include borrowing, internal lexical innovation and reduction. There should be some implications for borrowing processes and lexical changes, which are seen as obstacles to the comparative method. It is more difficult to
reconstruct a language that has a number of borrowing words. The authors draw a line between two concepts: borrowing and copying. The first implies that a word can return to its original language, which is not true, and the second does not. Chapter 12: Syntax Changes There are a number of syntactical change
processes. Typological differences are included, as well as the cycle of change. Typological changes are mainly related to the order of words, while grammatical changes are related to grammatical categories. The direction of grammatical changes is expected to occur in one direction (i.e. grammatical) - from lexical
morphs to grammatical morphemes. This chapter covers the mechanisms of syntax changes. That is, it includes processes of re-analysis, analogy, expansion, diffusion and borrowing. Chapter 13: Observing the change of language There is a general consensus among historical linguists that language change cannot be
observed, recent sociolinguistic studies show that this can be noticed. There are some difficulties in determining the type of change; for example, it is difficult to see some stylistic changes as a change in progress. In addition, differences and differences in small class-based communities are variable and based on socio-
economic conditions. Chapter 14: ContactLanguage Contact is one of the basic principles that lead to language change and/or loss. This chapter explores the concept of language genesis, including pidgins and Creoles. They contain a definition that may be contrary to most definitions. That is, they retain the existence of
the Creole language without any prior existence of the Pidgin language. Toc Pisin is cited in a thematic study, for example. As for mixed languages, they borrow structure from one language and vocabulary from another. Chapter 15: Cultural ReconstructionP the concept of cultural reconstruction is part of the historical
linguistics before those as long as we're talking about words. Other scientific fields can transfer their energies to historical linguistics, such as geology, archaeology and anthropology. Method Method comparative culture is applied in this area. Several examples from different cultures are covered. On the basis of cultural
reconstruction, we can determine the homeland of people by age hypothesis. The concepts of paleolithic and linguistic origin are included exclusively in this edition. The methods of cultural reconstruction are being considered. AssessmentThis book is conceived as an introduction to the central principles of historical
linguistics. It includes a number of methods and theories. I found this book to be a very good introduction to historical linguistics. However, I would not recommend this book to anyone who does not have a good background in historical linguistics because it has many typos that interfere with the understanding of the text.
In addition, exercises have typos that make them impossible to solve if you can't make a good guess and solve a typo in the first place. The brevity of the sections is not conducive to understanding the text. There should be another text available to guide the reader through accurate understanding. The style of this book
is similar to Historical Linguistics: The Introduction of Lyle Campbell. In fact, the latter has many examples and detailed explanations, although it does not cover many areas covered by Crowley and Bauern. Therefore, I do not recommend this book, in itself, as a sufficient source in historical linguistics. ... more of a book
