OBJECTIVE: Tell the students “Today, we will learn about figurative language. We will go over some terms you may

OPENING:
Retrieval Watch a you tube video that explains personification. Pass out a figurative language notes that lists 10
terms and definitions. Go over ones that they should already know and have the kids give examples of
each.

TEACHER INPUT:
Relevance Go over the new terms with a power point presentation that gives the new term, definition and
examples.
MODEL:
Routing Ask the kids for examples and ask them to highlight the new words on their worksheet. After each example,
discuss with the students whether the language helped their understanding of what they were reading.

GUIDED PRACTICE:
Retaining / Rehearsing
Pass out a new worksheet with examples in passages and blanks where they have to fill in the figurative language term
being used. Have them complete the worksheet with a partner or in small groups.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE:
Give each student their own passage with the following three or four questions: 1. Identify (highlight) the use of
personification in this passage and identify it next to the highlight. 2. Explain why they were useful-or do you think they
were? Extra points for coming up with your own example of one of the figurative elements we learned today.

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING:
