INFLAMMATORY / OVERUSE JOINT SYNDROMES, SPRAIN, AND STRAIN

BURSITIS

4. Describe the pain experienced with range of motion when the involved tissues are in different stages. Focus
discussion on tissue responses and characteristics and clinical signs. (limit response to 5-10 sentences)

Management During the Subacute Stage

During the second to fourth days after tissue injury, the inflammation begins to decrease, the clot starts resolving, and
repair of the injured site begins. This usually lasts an additional 10 to 17 days (14 to 21 days after the onset of injury) but
may last up to 6 weeks. During this stage of healing, the immature connective tissue that is produced is thin and
unorganized. It is extremely fragile and easily injured if overstressed, yet proper growth and alignment can be stimulated
by appropriate tensile loading in the line of normal stresses for that tissue. At the same time, adherence to surrounding
tissues can be minimized.

17. Decrease effects of stiffness ● Active ROM

● Joint-play mobilization techniques

18. Decrease pain from mechanical stress ● Splinting and/or assistive equipment to
and prevent deforming forces minimize stress or to correct faulty
biomechanics, strengthen supporting muscles

● Alternate activity with periods of rest

19. Educate the patient ● Teach about deforming forces and
prevention

● Teach home exercise program to reinforce

interventions and minimize symptoms

20. Improve neuromuscular control, ● Low-intensity resistance exercises

strength, and muscle endurance
● Low-intensity muscle repetitions

25-30. CASE STUDY

Develop a program of interventions for a patient with OA in the knees who has pain when ascending and descending
steps and has difficulty standing up from a chair. What examination procedures do you want to do? What functional
tests do you want to document? How would the program differ for an individual with symptoms of RA during a period
of active disease (the acute phase)? During a period of remission (the chronic phase)? Provide 2 on the items being
asked.
