Effect of Ayushman Bharat on BGS

Ayushman Bharat is a county wide implemented health protection scheme focusing on


eliminating the health security problems of socio-economically underprivileged population of
India. It impacts the poor section of the country which is around 500 million Indians by
providing health insurance coverage of up to 5 lakh rupees per annum. This scheme mainly
comprise of two components first one is National Health Protection Scheme which focuses on
providing cashless health treatments to the society and the second one is developments of
Health and Wellness Centers across the country to provide standard primary health care
facilities to socio-economically underprivileged sections of society across the country.

Impact on Society:

 The Ministry of Heath has doled out a list of 1354 packages for the targeted poor
population of the country under the scheme of Ayushman Bharat
 Various secondary and tertiary health care services like coronary bypass, knee
replacement, stinting would be provided at a 15-20% lower rates
 The will not be any cap size on the size of family or who would be beneficiaries of this
scheme. Poor people of all ages can be enrolled under this scheme

Impact on Businesses:

 Introduction of Ayushman Bharat is significantly affecting the health insurance


businesses in the country by drastic expansion in the health insurance market over a
period of time
 According to the reports by credit agencies like CRISIL and Moody’s there would be
significant penetration of health insurance sector form current of 34% to 50% across the
country
 Comprising of the Insurance Model and the Trust Model, the insurance model acts like a
private health insurance model where the state will pay all the premiums to the
insurance companies and they would be responsible for handling of the claims of the
beneficiaries

Role of Government:

 The scheme will be financed by both the central as well as the state government
 Both the state and Centre governments are also responsible of deciding the schemes
pricing and delivery framework.
 Under the Trust model of the scheme, the state would pay the premiums to a
government owned special purpose trust which would then take care of handling of the
claims
