The movie it’s about a Mexican family and a boy named Miguel, who wants to be a famous singer like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. For his family, music has been banned since his great-great-grandfather left his great-great-grandmother and his daughter Coco, to achieve fame as a musician. As is the tradition on the day of the dead, Miguel's family prepares the festive altar, the decoration, the photos of the ancestors and their presence in the future. Dante, the dog that accompanies Miguel, the tomb of the altar, the portrait in which it deals with the great-great-grandmother, Mama Coco and her great-great-great musician, whose face has been torn off. When taking the portrait, Miguel notices that his great-great-grandfather wore the same guitar as Ernesto de la Cruz, so he concludes that he is the great-great-grandfather of the singer. Miguel, passionate about becoming a famous singer, decided to participate in a singing contest on the Day of the Dead. But his grandmother destroys his guitar. Then, Miguel angry flees and steals the guitar from the mausoleum of Ernesto de la Cruz to act in the contest. However, to touch its strings, a mysterious spell, the transfer to the world of the dead with Dante, his dog friend. Miguel must get the blessing of one of his ancestors to not die at dawn. He meets Hector, a deceased who has never been honored at the altar of offerings, which exposes him to death in the world of the dead, to disappear forever. Then, Hector proposed to Miguel to give his great-great-grandfather in exchange for putting his picture on the altar when he returns to the world of the living. But he discovers that Miguel has more relatives and he takes him for a liar.Miguel, on his own, finds the singer. He is about to bless him but Hector appears begging Miguel to keep his promise. Ernesto de la Cruz recognizes Héctor, the true composer of all his songs. A discussion between them shows that Ernesto de la Cruz had murdered Hector for the purpose of stealing his songs, after Hector resigned to return with his family. Concerned about his reputation, Ernesto de la Cruz steals Hector's photo and tries to eliminate them by throwing them into an underground lake from which they cannot leave. Down there, Héctor tells him about his daughter, Coco, to whom he composed the theme "Recuérdame". Thus, Miguel understands that his real great-great-grandfather is Hector. In addition, they manage to get out of the hole with the help of Dante, Imelda and the alebrije. They cannot recover the photo but they manage to unmask Ernesto de la Cruz in public. Imelda finally gives the blessing to Miguel. However, there is the problem that Hector begins to disappear because Mama Coco is already losing his memory. Miguel, when he returns to the world of the living, sings "Recu érdame" to Coco to help him recover his memory. Mama Coco confesses that she kept the letters and lyrics of her father's songs, as well as the piece of the family photo that was missing. In that way, Hector would be at the altar of the family and would become an idol throughout the city. Finally, Miguel could be the musician who dreamed.
