1.

Suppose a class of 20 students were asked their favorite subject a total of 17

students responded as shown in the following table.
a. Which measure of central tendency should we use here?
The measure of central tendency that we should use here is the mode because
mode is used in the categorical data and in our table, the data shows the subject which
is used as a nominal because there is no ranking and mode is the most frequent score
in our data set and as you can see in the table below we have a value which appears as
the most frequently occurring data and that is 2 for the subject Arts and History.

b. What would be the mean, median and mode?

 Mean: x́ = ∑ x / n

= 17 / 6
x́ = 2.83
Median: 4+1 = 5
=5/2
Median = 2.5
Mode: 2

2. Sleep habits of College freshmen were investigated. Below are the data gathered
on the number of hours slept per night during weekdays for the span of the whole
semester for 100 freshmen:

Compute for the Mean, Median, Mode, Sample Standard Deviation, Sample Variance,
Coefficient of Variation and Range

Mean: x́ = ∑ x / n

= 100 / 6
x́ = 16.67
Median: 13+16 = 29
= 29 / 2
Median = 14.5

Mode: Non-modal
Range: XL – XS
= 28 – 8
R = 20

Sample Variance: s2 = ∑ ¿¿ / n – 1

= 331.34 / 6 – 1
= 331.34 / 5

s2 = 66.27

Sample Standard Deviation: s = √ ∑ ¿ ¿ ¿ / n- 1

= √ 66.27
s = 8.14
Coefficient of Variation: s / x́ x 100
= 8.14 / 16.67 x 100
= 48.83 %
3. 12 students took a test in a Statistical class, below are the summary of the test
scores:
                70, 77, 65, 56, 99, 62, 79, 73, 85, 87, 92, 82
56, 62, 65, 70, 73, 77, 79, 82, 85, 87, 92, 99

 Find the value of 80th percentile

Pk = (k/100)n

= (80/100)12

= 9.6 (round up)

= 10

P80 = 87

 Find D5

Dk = (k/10)n

= (5/10)12
=6

D5 = 77

 Find Q1

Qk = (k/4)12

= (1/4)12

=3

Q1 = 65

 Find the percentile rank for the score 82 and interpret.

Percentile rank of 82 = number of values less than 82 / total number of values x 100

= 7 / 12 x 100

Percentile rank of 82 = 58 % of the values are less than 82
