ASSIGNMENT

Answer the following questions. You can attach a picture or documents file.

1. Explain the importance of biogeochemical cycles.

-Biogeochemical cycles are subject to disturbance by human activities. Humans
accelerate natural biogeochemical cycles when elements are extracted from their reservoir, or
sources, and deposited back into the environment (sinks). Therefore, biogeochemical cycles are
important because they regulate the elements necessary for life on earth by cycling them through
the biological and physical aspects of the world.

2. Why is the cycling of matter essential to the continuance of life on the Earth.
-Cycles flow in a cyclical path from the environment through an
organism and return to the environment. The continuance of this cycle ensures the
flow of nutrients in the environment and in the living organisms which is essential
to life on earth.
3. When does a food chain occur?
-Flow from autotrophic organisms to consumer organisms, as each
population is eating and being eaten, is called a food chain. This happens when an
organism that belongs high up in the food chain eats another organism that belong
in the lower ranks, and so on.
4. In tabular form, give the difference between heterotrophic and an autotrophic organism.

AUTOTROPHIC HETEROTROPHIC
-Produce their own food -Do not produce their own food
-Members of the plant Kingdom and certain -All members of the animal kingdom
unicellular organisms like cyanobacteria
-Can store light energy into chemical energy -Cannot store energy
-At the primary level of food chain -At the secondary or tertiary level of food
chain
-Produce their own food for energy -Eat other organisms to obtain energy
-They cannot move from their place -Can move from one place to another in
search of food and shelter.
Examples: Plant, algae, and some bacteria Examples: Herbivores, carnivores, omnivores

5. How does the type of soil determine what plants will grow in an area?
-Climate, soil, the ability of soil to hold water, and the slope, or angle, of the land
all determine what types of plants will grow in a particular region. Forests are
areas with trees grouped in a way so their leaves, or foliage, shade the ground.
