PARABOLA

JOHN MARTIN FERRER

PARABOLA
Is a set of all points
in a plane that are
equidistant from a
fixed line called
the directrix and
fixed point of the
plane known as
the focus.

Terms and Definition
Directrix: A fixed reference line, situated on
the convex side of a conic section, that is
used when defining or calculating its
eccentricity.
Focus: A point having the property that the
distances from any point on a curve to it and
to a fixed line have a constant ratio for all
points on the curve.
Terms and Definition
Vertex: Point of intersection of the curve and
its axis.
Latus Rectum: Line passing through the focus
and parallel to its directrix. It intersects the
parabola at two different points. The length
of the latus rectum is 4c.

5.) Find the equation of the parabola with its
axis parallel to the y-axis, vertex at (2,-1), and
passes through point (3,1).
6.) Find the equation of the parabola that opens
downward, has directrix y=-1/2, if the vertex is
on line 2x – y +1 = 0 and the focus is on the line
2y – 5x + 1 = 0.

7.) 𝑥 2 − 8𝑥 + 4𝑦 + 24 = 0
8.) 𝑦 2 + 4𝑦 + 6𝑥 + 10 = 0
9.) 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 8𝑦 − 9 = 0
10.) 𝑦 2 − 4𝑦 − 6𝑥 − 14 = 0
11.) Vertex at (2,-1), passes through point(0,-5)
with the axis parallel to the x – axis
12.) Vertex at (-3,1) and passes through point
(5,5) with the axis parallel to the x – axis.
