Adverbs

Adverbs are the words which tell us about an action. It answers how? where?
and when?

1. Virendra Sehwag plays technically.


2. She sings melodiously.
3. Rahul speaks loudly.
4. Amol runs fast.
5. Rohan drives carefully.

In the above sentences plays, sings, speaks, runs and drives are verbs and
technically, melodiously, loudly, fast and carefully are the words telling about an
action.They tell us about manner.

1.Ram is coming here.

2.She is singing there.

In the above sentences come and sing are action verbs and here and there
are adverbs. The tell us about place.

1.He is studying now.

2.I will meet you soon.

In the above sentences study and meet are action verbs and now and soon
are adverbs. They tell us about time.
Note: Words modifying other adverbs and adjectives are also known as
adverbs.

Eg. He drove the car very carefully.

His handwriting is extremely good.

Other examples are

too difficult

rather attractive.

quite late.

Adverb formation.

Many adjectives can be transformed into adverbs by addition of suffix – ly

Slow slowly

Courage courageously

If the adjective ends in – ll just add y.

Full - fully.

If the adjective ends in y change y to ily.


If the adjective ends in le replace e with y.

horrible – horribly.

***Note: Do not add – ly after late, hard and fast.

Order of adverbs - Remember MPT i.e. Manner adverbs will come first then
place and then time.

Example - Amol is studying sincerely inside today.
