HYPOTHESIS TESTING

Q1. State the null and alternative hypotheses for each situation:

a- Null hypothesis, H0: µ ≤ 3.5

Alternative hypothesis, H1: μ > 3.5

b- Null hypothesis, H0: µ ≥ 20

Alternative hypothesis, H1: µ < 20

c- Null hypothesis, H0: µ= 83

Alternative hypothesis, H1: μ ≠ 83

.

Q2. Did the medication affect intelligence?

Step 1: Set up the null and alternate hypothesis

H0: medication affects intelligence
Ha: medication does not affect intelligence

Step 2: the type of test to use

since the sample size is 30; we use the z-test.

Step 3: Calculate the tested statistic z using the formula

z = (Ẋ - µ˳) / [ σ / √ n]
Where Ẋ is the mean of the sample , µ˳ is the null hypothesis given mean), and σ is
the given standard deviation and n is the sample number

Ẋ= 140

µ˳ = 100

σ = SD = 15

Sample size = 30

Z = 140-100 / (15 / √ 30) = 40 / 3.65 = 14.606

Step 4:  Getting the values of z from statistical tables.

This comes to be 1.96

Step 5: conclusion
The tested statistic value of z calculated is more than the critical value
obtained from statistical tables.
14.606 > 1.96

 Therefore we reject the null hypothesis.

This means, from the question, that the medication administered does
not affect intelligence.
