B. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION

1. Rationale

Rice productivity is everyone’s concern to attain rice self-sufficiency. Efforts made by

the Department of Agriculture resulted Region 02 to be the 2nd rank among the 17 regions in
the country. However, an average yield of only 4240 kg/ha (PSA Data ) is attained due to
wide adverse rice areas. The region has a total of 291, 674 ha rice land of which 74, 368 ha
drought prone, 43, 029 ha submergence-prone and around 14, 000 ha saline prone. Average
rice production in the rainfed lowland areas is less than 2.5 MT/ha, even much lower in
flood-prone areas at 1.5-2.5 MT/ha (Sawin et al, 2005, Maclean at , 2002) and saline-prone
areas a 1.0-2.0 MT/ha (Gregorio et al, 2002) compared with the average yield of 4.7 MT/ha
in the irrigated ecosystem.

Breeding institutions like PhilRice, UPLB, IRRI and other private companies
continuously breed varieties for different ecosystems. Rice breeding takes a maximum of
seven (7) years to produce a variety. Initially bred rice lines undergone to the different
process which include National Multi-Environment Trial (NMET 0, 1, 2, &3). The NMET 3
or National Cooperative Testing (NCT), the last phase of evolution of elite lines before these
are recommended as variety is participated by Da-RFO02. Promising elite lines with higher
yield of atleast 5% over the check variety, resistant to [pest and diseases and with good
eating quality are recommended as variety by the Rice Varietal Improvement Group (RVIG)
to the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC).

Rice varieties released as of 2016 totalled to 274 varieties breakdown to 81 irrigated

inbred, 81 irrigated hybrid, five (5) aromatic, eight (8) japonica, one (1) micronutrient, eight
(8) rainfed transplanted, seven (7) rainfed dry seeded, 26 rainfed drought prone, one (1) flood
prone, six (6) cool elevated and 33 saline prone varieties are ready to farmers use. However,
some varieties are not at the hand of farmers especially for newly-released ones.

The Department of Agriculture (DA), international Rice Institute (IRRI) and the
Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) came up with a project under the Food Staples
Sufficiency Program (FSSP) of the Philippine that fast track the adoption of next-Generation
rice varieties which eventually results to the increase productivity of rice farmers.

The DA-Regional Field Offices are then tapped to implement this project through
Participatory Varietal Selection (PVS)Trials. In this case, farmers are allowed to observe and
select varieties based on their selection criteria. High yielding rice varieties that are preferred

by farmers are seed produced to ensure availability of seeds for farmers.

2. OBJECTIVES

General Objective:

To accelerate the introduction and adoption of next-generation rice varieties with

resistance/tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses.

Specific objectives:

a. To introduce and demonstrate the performance of newly released rice varieties in

their target environments;
b. To validate recommendation domain of a variety under a specific agro-climatic
condition and ecosystem;
Expected Output:
 Five (5) high yielding rice varieties, preferred by farmers in the locality and with good
eating quality;
 Farmers adopted the recommended variety.

Potential Impact:
 Increased rice productivity in the different ecosystems.

3. Conceptual Framework

The project follows the input-process-output concept as shown in Figure 1. The

input is the intervention on the evaluation of different elite lines and newly released rice
varieties. The process contains the strategies to implement the project in addressing the
problem in the development of rice varieties appropriate to plant in the adverse
ecosystem. The project envisions the farmers in Region 02 to adopt the developed rice
varieties with resistance /tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses.

The project was started in 2014 as a National Food Self Sufficiency Program
(FSSP) which consist of three (3) components and will be implemented by the different
DA-Centers/Stations.

PARTICIPATORY VARIETAL SELECTIONS (PVS)

PPTV_RM is a replicated trial conducted in a farmer’s field and essentially

managed by a researcher, an agricultural extension worker and the farmer. It evaluates
the adaptability of different rice varieties released recently in the intended ecosystem
given the farmer’s management practices with supervision from agricultural technician or
researcher.

The PVS following studies with the number of sites will be implemented by the
DA-Research Centers/Experiment Stations SCRC, NCES, CVRC, QES and NVES:

Experimental Design
The trial will be conducted using a Randomized Complete Block Design with three
replications. Randomization for each of the PPTV trials per ecosystem in each region will have
to be done by the regional researchers. The plot size for each entry is 24 m2 or 4m x 6m (20 rows
by 30 hills at 20 cm planting distance between rows and between hills). The field book contains
the samples for plot randomization, samples for field layout, and data sheets for PPTV RM 2019
Wet Season. For validity of a trial, the initial criterion is that exact plot sizes and number of
plants or hills per plot should be followed. In cases where rice paddy of cooperator is not able to
accommodate a trial with 24 m2 plots, the plot size can be reduced to a minimum of 12 m2 or
3m x 4m (15 rows by 20 hills at 20 cm planting distance between hills and rows).

In a trial, test entries and checks are randomly assigned with plot numbers and the 3
replicates have different randomization. There should be no vacant rows between plots (entries).
Number the plots consecutively from left to right in all replications following a serpentine
layout. Stakes bearing labels (plot number and variety number) are placed at the first hill of the
left-most row of each plot. Mark and place all labels before distributing the seedlings for
transplanting. Variety number assigned to each entry should not be adjusted.

Considering that PPTV trials will be conducted in farmers’ fields, it may happen that the
allotted paddy or area may not accommodate the proposed field plan. In this case, the researcher
may modify the field layout but must ensure that one replication is accommodated in one paddy
or area and assigned plot numbers per entry is followed according to the randomization and field
layout.

Prior to seeding, sun-dry seeds to break dormancy. The seeds could be seeded in either
wet or dry beds where they can be grown for 18-21 days. For Saline ecosystem, seedlings older
than 21 days can be planted. Seedbeds should be located in areas that are not subjected to
flooding or water stress. The seedlings are kept free from insects, diseases and other pests, and
properly irrigated. Fertilizers may or may not be applied at seedbed depending on seedling stand.

Some farmers practice cutting of seedlings at the root zone using a bladed tool (referred
to as “laplap” system) instead of uprooting seedlings prior to transplanting. For the trial, please
avoid this practice to minimize stress to the seedlings and to maintain health of seedlings at
transplanting.

Prior to pulling, prepare seedling tags or labels and secure tags or labels on seedling
bundles before transporting seedlings from the seedbed to the field. Distribute seedlings based on
plot labels and according to the field plan or layout. Check the entries and plots for any possible
mistake(s) before transplanting the seedlings.

Seedlings are transplanted at 2-3 seedlings per hill. Keep some seedlings near the plot
label to replant missing hills within 7 days after transplanting. Do not replant missing hills at
more than 10 days after transplanting. To minimize incidence of missing hills due to golden
apple snail (GAS), keep water to a depth of 1-2 cm at transplanting and do not irrigate until two
weeks after transplanting. Apply molluscicide immediately after transplanting especially for
areas with persistent GAS problem. For rainfed areas, make small canals on the side of the paddy
deep enough to keep water that will be used to irrigate the paddy at two weeks after
transplanting. Roguing should be exercised at appropriate stages of the crop.

Nutrient Management

Nutrient management will be based on the result of soil analysis submitted to DA-RFO

Harvesting and Determination of Yield

Plants will be harvested at 85 to 90% maturity. During harvesting, leave two border rows
at each end of the plot and harvest all plants in the inner rows. For a 24 m2 plot data, the total
number of plants harvested is 16 rows x 26 plants per row or 416 hills (or 16.64 m2). Count the
actual number of hills harvested to determine actual harvest area per plot per entry. The harvest
from each plot is placed in clean sacks with labels, bearing the plot number and entry name,
placed inside the sacks or attached/ written on the sacks. Thresh, clean harvest samples and
remove half-filled or empty grains with the use of winnow or seed blower. Weigh clean grains
or seeds and simultaneously take moisture content of grains using a moisture tester. Transfer
clean seeds into a clean sack or bag with proper label.

Agronomic data to be collected:

Flowering/Heading
Actual Date when 50% of the main tillers of the whole population in a plot are
flowering/heading.
Maturity
Actual Date when 85% of the grains on panicles of plants of the whole plot have ripened
or are mature, i.e. the color is yellow.
Date of Harvest
Actual Date of Harvest
Height
Plant height measured in centimetres from two sample plants, from soil surface to the tip
of the tallest panicle (awns excluded); this is obtained at 85% maturity.
Tiller
Average number of productive tillers per hill taken from two sample hills (same hills
where measurements of plant height are taken).
Lodging
Lodging incidence taken as the percentage of plants in a plot that lodged at least at a 45-
degree angle at maturity.
Plot Yield
Weight (grams) of grains at harvest (excluding borders) from the 16.64 m2 harvest area
(or 416 hills).
No of Plants
Actual number of plants or hills harvested, missing hills will be indicated. For 16.64 m2
harvest area, there are 416 hills.

Harvest Area
Actual harvest area of 16.64 m2, which may be adjusted in case of missing hills. Harvest
area is adjusted as:
Adjusted harvest area, m2 = (16.64 m2 x actual number of hills harvested) ÷ 416

MC
Moisture content (in percent). After weighing for plot yield, moisture content is obtained
immediately from at least two samples using a moisture tester.
Yield
Yield, kg/ha = plot yield x ((100-MC) ÷ 86) * (10000 ÷ harvest area)

Preferential Analysis
Preference data will be gathered using preferential analysis conducted on field days when
majority of the entries are 85-90% mature. A group of farmers is allowed to “vote” for their
preferred varieties by depositing paper ballots in a paper box attached to a stake in front of the
plot. After votes are tallied, the farmers are asked to discuss why they preferred the varieties
receiving the most votes. Preference analysis (PA) generates two kinds of data: (a) quantitative
preference score for each variety, expressed as the number of positive votes it received minus
negative votes divided by the total number of votes cast, and (b) list of agronomic
characteristics farmers liked about the preferred varieties.

Sensory evaluation is a useful tool to evaluate the cooking and eating quality of the varieties
tested in the PPTV-RM trial. The evaluation was conducted one month after. By doing this
evaluation exercise, researchers can identify and understand farmers’ preferences and
acceptability of the rice genotypes based on its cooked rice qualities. Top 3 highest yielding and
top 3 preferred varieties may be used in the sensory evaluation, but 4-6 varieties are
recommended for a less complex activity.

Data Analysis

The Data gathered will be subjected to Analysis of variance and the Duncan Multiple
Range Test (DMRT) was used to test further the significance between or among the treatment
means.

Preference data was gathered during the conduct of Wet Season field days when majority
of the entries are 85-90% mature at two experimental sites located at San Francisco, Aglipay,
Quirino and San Antonio, Diffun, Quirino. Date of field days were; October 17, 2019 for
Aglipay site and October 27, 2019 for Diffun site. Overall, the preferential analysis was
participated by 53 farmers, researchers and Agricultural Extension Workers.
The activity was done first by inviting the group of farmers in the field allowing them to
vote for their preferred varieties and list down the traits they observed for that entries. After
which, the votes are tallied and ask why they preferred the varieties receiving the most votes.
Result of Preferential Analysis with rank and reason why they choose those varieties was
detailed on Table 7. Based from the result of conducted preferential analysis, NSIC RC506 is the
most preferred varieties by farmers both at San Antonio, Diffun and San Francisco, Aglipay,
Quirino that can yield 6.1 MT/Ha. They choose these variety because it has a characteristic of
uniformity in growth, more productive tillers and produce long and more grains. Next in rank is
NSIC Rc510 with a characteristic of long panicles and more spikelets, with good standing and
can yield 5.9MT/ha. On the other hand, differ variety was chosen as the top three preferred
varieties of farmers, for San Antonio they preferred both NSIC Rc512 and NSIC RC222 check
variety while NSIC RC442 at San Francisco, Aglipay. NSIC RC222 check and NSIC Rc512 as
describe by the farmers have a good standing and produces more tillers while NSIC Rc442
produces more tillers and grains.
For Dry Season cropping, there were no preference data gathered due to the amidst of
COVID 19 pandemic.

5,878.58kg/hectare and 5,744.32kg/hectare respectively. NSIC Rc508, NSIC Rc506
and NSIC Rc510 are best grown during Dry Season cropping with a yield of
7,589.87kg/hectare, 6,709.09kg/hectare, 6,460.42kg/hectare

3. Result of Preferential Analysis showed that, NSIC Rc506 is the most preferred
varieties by farmers on both Aglipay and Diffun condition that can yield to 6.1
MT/Ha, followed by NSIC Rc510 with a yield of 5.9MT/ha. Top three preferred
varieties of farmers are NSIC Rc512 and NSIC RC222 for San Antonio while NSIC
RC442 at San Francisco, Aglipay, Quirino. Characteristics that farmers like much on
NSIC Rc506 are uniformity in growth, more productive tillers and can produce long
and more grains. Long panicles, more spikelet and with good standing are traits
describe on NSIC Rc510, while good standing of crop and with more tillers are
attributes found on NSIC Rc512 and NSIC 222 check variety. NSIC Rc442 on the
other hand have more productive tillers and grains.

4. For the Sensory Evaluation, Overall preference based on the three traits; Tenderness
& Moistness; Aroma & Flavor and Stickiness showed that, NSIC Rc508 is the most
preferred by the panelist of farmers and researchers, followed by NSIC Rc510 and
NSIC Rc442. NSIC Rc506 is the least preferred by the group of evaluators.

Recommendation

Those preferred varieties should be recommended for seed production or

multiplication for areas under Quirino growing condition and other similar areas.
