Course Title: Basic University Mathematics - I

Course Code: MAT 100
Spring 2018, AR 8:00-9:30 (section-1), Duration: 1:30

Instructor: Annatoma Arif E-mail: annatoma_arif@yahoo.com

Room # 5006 Office Hours: M 10:30-11:30

Course Description:

This is one of the courses offered by the university, which fulfils the requirement of
“Numeracy” for graduation from the University. This course is mandatory for the
students who wish to major in any Liberal Arts subject. There is no prerequisite for this
course though it is expected that the students have a fair amount of background in
school mathematics.

Course policy:
1. It is student’s responsibility to gather information about the assignments and
covered topics during the semester that will be missed. Regular class attendance
is mandatory. Points will be taken off for missing classes. Without 70% of
attendance, sitting for final exam is NOT allowed. According to IUB system
students must enter the classroom within the first 25 minutes to get attendance
submitted.
2. The date of quiz, mid term and final is already given here, however,
announcement will be given ahead of time. There is NO provision for make-up
quizzes.
3. The reading materials for each class will be given prior to the class so that
student may have a look into the materials.
4. Students must take tutorials with the instructor during the office hours. Prior
appointment is required.
5. Students must maintain the IUB code of conduct and ethical guidelines offered
by the school of liberal arts and science.

Assessment and Grading Procedures:

Students are required to come to the class on time. None will be allowed to enter the
class later than 25 minutes from the start of the class. Students are requested to follow
the attendance policy strictly which has been set by the university.

Home assignment and problems will be assigned for practice, regularly. Students must
submit the assignment within due date declared by faculty. Assessment will be based
on the following weighting:

Department of Physical Sciences 1

MAT 100: Spring 2018

Quizzes : 30%
Midterm Exam : 25%
Class attendance & performance : 10%
Final Exam : 35%

Note: The students are advised to sit in the exam in the prescribed dates. No
alternative times or extra test will be arranged for the students who will fail to sit
for their test on prescribed dates

General Education Outcomes and Assessment

Outcomes
Quantitative Reasoning-Students will be Quiz, midterm, final exam
able to use quantitative skills and the
concepts and methods of mathematics to
solve problems

Information & Technology Literacy- Quiz, midterm, final exam

Students will be able to collect, evaluate
and interpret information and effectively
use information technologies.

Grade Conversion Scheme:

At the end of the course a letter grade will be awarded to students based upon their
performance in all tests conducted over the whole semester. The final grade will be
calculated with the following procedure.

85% and above: A 60% to less than 65%: C+

80% to less than 85%: A- 55% to less than 60%: C
75% to less than 80%: B+ 50% to less than 55%: C-
