Renaissance and Medieval 'Madonna and Child' painting different from one another

Renaissance was the rebirth of what was achieved by the Greek and romans during classical antiquity.
During that time artist believed in perfection, worshiped beauty and made that everything should be
proportionate. So their arts had clear details, curves, textured drapes, facial enhanced feature and
expression. Artist were free minded and was constantly developing and inventing new things. So in
renaissance with the help of wealthy families those values were studied revises and were revived. The
Aldobrandini Madonna painting was made for private ownership. The body posture is very relaxed and
seems like and simple mother passing time with her children until you notice the halo on their head.
Other than that, it has real human like expression body curves muscle twitching and turning with bright
vibrant colors. Another important feature is the background. Artist of renaissance used to boastfully
show the landscapes of Florence and Italy in their paintings. The proportion is accurate. Background has
high dark contrast which highlights the face of Madonna which is bright. However, in the medieval art
many of the techniques and detail are missing in contrast of the renaissance version of Madonna.
Medieval art was influenced by the church. Artist had no freewill in their painting. Church commission
the painting and demanded what they wanted. Artist were bound to that. The arts of medieval period
were mostly on religious themes. People were uneducated during medieval so graphical representation
was hugely used to carry religious message. Those paintings had golden background which represents
royalty. Human figures had no sense of proportion. In the given art of Madonna, we can see long fingers
awkward unrelaxed body posture. There’s no landscape but only single color. No sense of depth from
background to foreground.

Botticelli draw his inspiration for 'The Birth of Venus' from the classical statues.

How would you describe the significance of Michelangelo's 'Pieta' to a friend, in terms of composition,
technique and details?

Michelangelo was a scuplturar who sculpted “pieta” out of a single slab of marble. I would explain to my
friend showing him the advances flooding’s in their cloths and how smooth and soft they look. It’s
difficult to give such fine detail from a stone. Marble is very fragile so it needed very patience touch.
Single mistake could break the entire statue. The figure of two body is very realistic in terms of sitting
posture. We can easily connect to the statue because its look so natural. The muscles of the body look
so relaxed and was depicted by excellent accuracy. This statue also gives expression of sadness.

Identify the elements of Classism in the following fresco. (2)

The classism is the first approach in reviving the culture of forgotten Roman and Greek Civilization. They
were an interlocking civilization who discovered new things. So in classism the artist brought back the
terms and techniques that was used in classical antiquity which is before Medieval period. A main goal
was to be perfect in proportion, scale, composition, simplicity. So in the fresco there are huge columns
which was shown possible for the first time during the Roman and Greek interlocking period. There is
symmetry in the architectural structure. There is sense of distance and depth between foreground and
background. The proportion is accurate because humans are shown in smaller size which is natural in
contrast to the architect. A fresco usually has matte finish and that’s why the picture is not shiny. There
is also arches, semicircular arches and this are all classism elements.

Renaissance artists looked to Roman and Greeks interlocking civilization for inspiration. That time period
is also known as classical antiquity.

'Creation of Adam', describe Michelangelo's signature style of painting figures.

Pope Julius the second of Vatican hired Michelangelo to repaint Sistine chapel which became old.
Michelangelo was a sculpturar and that was his first paintings. His signature style is the twitch and turn
of body muscles. He depicts the character in idle relaxed position and portrayed naturally how muscles
would compress or extend in a human body. This is a famous fresco so you can notice the tear and
cracks in paintings. Human body is emphasized and shown with intricate detail as an idle male figure.
