 General
1.
1.1 Introduction
We have improved the techniques of design, manufacture and testing of gas circuit breakers and
the analyzing and evaluating techniques since we supplied the gas circuit breaker first in Japan in
1965. We are making every effort to develop a series of gas circuit breakers that have higher
performance and reliability and are more compact and easier to maintain.
These new spring-operated three-phase enclosed type gas circuit breakers have been developed
based on various new techniques. Compared to conventional gas circuit breakers, they have
higher performance and reliability and are smaller, lighter and easier to maintain.
Our basic concept for the design of these new gas circuit breakers is shown below.
1. Reduction in size, weight and required operating force by applying an interrupter
(ComAuto) composed of a heat puffer and a mechanical puffer that can efficiently give
the required puffer chamber pressure with the aid of arc energy generated when current is
interrupted
2. Reduction in size and weight and improvement of reliability by applying a new spring
mechanism, BM-J4, that is about 60% of the size of conventional type spring mechanisms
and has improved latch engagement reliability
3. Utilization of the reliability of conventional techniques by making the best use of
conventional structures and systems proved to be effective
4. Application of maintenance-free and inspection-free components to further simplify the
maintenance work
As stated above, we have developed these new spring-operated three-phase enclosed type gas
circuit breakers applying the most advanced techniques as well as various techniques which we
have improved for many years to improve the performance and reliability, reduce the size and
simplify the maintenance. We present the gas circuit breakers to you with confidence.

1.3 Features
Mitsubishi spring-operated three-phase enclosed type gas circuit breaker ensures high
performance and reliability utilizing the features of J Series new high-performance interrupter
(ComAuto) and spring mechanism.

(1) Maintenance and inspection labor saving

Since the interrupter is sealed in SF6 gas and isolated from the external atmosphere, the parts
do not deteriorate for a long time. The parts in the spring mechanism need not be replaced.
Application of a cam-type auxiliary switch eliminates the need of applying grease to the
contacts. Thus, labor for maintenance and inspection can be saved.

(2) Compact and light

Application of a new compact and high-performance interrupter (ComAuto) and a compact
spring mechanism realizes the small and light circuit breaker.

(3) Excellent interrupting performance

The circuit breaker uses a nozzle made of a new material that is less damaged or worn upon
occurrence of interruption owing to short-circuiting and SF6 gas excelling in arc
extinguishing and insulating performance. Therefore, the circuit breaker shows excellent
interrupting performance even in unusual cases, such as short-range line fault and
interruption owing to power swing, as well as in cases of general short-circuiting. When
exciting current is interrupted, the interrupted current is low, therefore, the overvoltage is
extremely low. Charging current can be interrupted without restriking. Thus, the circuit
breaker has excellent performance.

(4) Excellent environmental resistance

Since the circuit breaker is in an earthing enclosure, its center of gravity is located low, and
it excels in earthquake resistance.
Since the interrupter is housed in the earthing enclosure, it is not affected by external factors,
such as fouling, and keeps high reliability.
The operating characteristics of the spring mechanism are hardly affected by changes in
temperature. Therefore, the circuit breaker can operate reliably even in hot and cold
districts.

(5) Low operating noise

Use of a small spring mechanism reduces the operating noise. Therefore, the circuit
breaker can be used at substations in urban areas and in the vicinity of residential districts.

1. Introduction

The disconnecting switch is installed in order to disconnect main circuits.

The disconnecting switch should be interlocked with the circuit breakers, other disconnect
switches, the earthing (grounding) switches and so on.
Earthing (grounding) switches are installed to various units in order to ground
conductors for the safety during inspection. The earthing (grounding) switch is to be
interlocked with the associated disconnect switches and the circuit breaker to prevent
making operation to live circuit.

The DS and ES (GS) of this GIS are combined type, therefore for the most applications
a DS and an ES (GS) are combined as one module. This combined type DS/ES (GS) is
equipped with one common rotary moving contact. The rotary moving contact has three
fixed positions, that is; [DS closed] – [DS open / ES (GS) open] (or Neutral) – [ES (GS)
closed]. The moving contact of each phase is connected by insulating rods and all
three-phase contacts are operated by one operating mechanism.
Independent type DS and ES (GS) are also used where necessary. In this case, DS or ES
(GS) has its own rotary moving contact having two fixed positions, [open] – [closed].
Basic construction is same as combined type.

Please refer to instructions of operating mechanism for details about operating

mechanism.

(3/10) HBN-E0982
2. Structure and Operation

2.1 Combined type disconnecting switch and earthing (grounding) switch (Type
GRD/GRED)

Figure 1 show structures of the combined type DS/ES (GS) (Type GRD/GRED).
The disconnecting switch (DS) and the earthing (grounding) switch (ES (GS)) are
equipped with one rotary type moving contact (C13).
Where the both DS and ES (GS) are required, a combined DS/ES (GS) module is
applied. In this case, DS and ES (GS) are combined into one module and equipped with
one rotary type moving contact (C13). This contact has three fixed positions, [DS closed]
– [DS open & ES (GS) open] (Neutral) –. Moving contacts (C13) rotate in the opposite
direction from [DS open & ES (GS) open] (Neutral) to [DS closed] or [ES (GS) closed].
The rotary blade type moving contact (C13) of each phase is connected by insulating rods
(C16) and all three-phase blades are operated by one operating mechanism (C17).
Operating mechanism (C17) is installed outside of enclosure (C11). Insulating rods
(C16) are connected to operating mechanism (C17) through gas-tight shaft (C18). The
insulating rods (C16) are driven by operating mechanism (C17) and rotate three moving
contacts (C13) simultaneously.

All the parts of conductors and contacts are designed for their outline to reduce
electrical field strength so that high reliable insulation is obtained. The simple in-line
arrangement of three-phase rotary shaft and gas-tight shaft makes it compact and reliable.

For testing or maintenance, such as measurement of main circuit resistance and

discharging of residual charge of main circuit etc., earthing (grounding) terminals (D20)
are furnished. Earthing (grounding) terminal (D20) of each phase is insulated and fixed by
an insulator. For such usage, earthing (grounding) terminals (D20) can be used by
removing shunt bar (D21).

2.2 Independent type disconnecting switch (Type GRD)

Figure 2 show structures of the independent type DS (Type GRD). This type DS is also
equipped with its own rotary type moving contact having two fixed position, [Closed] –
[Open] and having similar features as combined type DS/ES (GS). Construction is such
that the function and parts of ES (GS) are eliminated from combined type.

(4/10) HBN-E0982
2.3 Independent type disconnecting switch (Type GLD)

Figure 3 show structures of the independent type DS (Type GLD). This type DS is also
equipped with its own rotary type moving contact having two fixed position, [Closed] –
[Open] and having similar features as combined type DS/ES (GS). Construction is such
that the function and parts of ES (GS) are eliminated from combined type.

2.4 Independent type earthing (grounding) switch (Type GRE)

Figure 4 shows an example of independent type ES (GS).The ES (GS) is equipped with

moving contacts (D13). The moving contact (D13) of each phase is connected by
connecting rods (D16) and all three-phase blades are operated by one operating mechanism
(D17).
Operating mechanism (D17) is installed outside of frame (D11). Connecting rods
(D16) are connected to operating mechanism (D17) through gas-tight shaft (D18). The
connecting rods (D16) are driven by operating mechanism (D17).

In normal service condition, the electrical potential of moving contact of ES (GS)

(D13) is the same level as that of frame (D11) by shunt bar (D21), which connects moving
contacts (D13) and frame (D11).

All the parts of conductors and contacts are designed for their outline to reduce
electrical field strength so that high reliable insulation is obtained. The simple in-line
arrangement of three-phase rotary shaft and gas-tight shaft makes it compact and reliable.

1. Introduction

The fault making earthing switch (FES) (fast – acting type grounding switch (FAGS))
is earthing (grounding) switch having fault making capability. High-speed moving contact
and arcing fixed contact enable this capability.

Usually a motor-charged spring drive operating mechanism is used to obtain high-speed

operation. The operating mechanism is operated and electrically controlled from the local
control cubicles as well as remotely from the control panel in the control room. Manual
operation is also available for maintenance and / or emergency operation.

Please refer to instructions of operating mechanism for details about operating

mechanism.

2. Structure and Operation

Figure 1 shows an example of the fault making earthing switch (FES) (fast – acting type
grounding switch (FAGS)). The FES (FAGS) is equipped with moving contacts (D13). The
moving contact (D13) of each phase is connected by connecting rods (D16) and all three-
phase blades are operated by one operating mechanism (D17).
Operating mechanism (D17) is installed outside of frame (D11). Connecting rods
(D16) are connected to operating mechanism (D17) through gas-tight shaft (D18). The
connecting rods (D16) are driven by operating mechanism (D17).

In normal service condition, the electrical potential of moving contact of FES (FAGS)
(D13) is the same level as that of frame (D11) by shunt bar (D21), which connects moving
contacts (D13) and frame (D11).

For testing or maintenance, such as measurement of main circuit resistance and

discharging of residual charge of main circuit etc., earthing (grounding) terminals (D20) are
furnished. Earthing (grounding) terminal (D20) of each phase is insulated and fixed by an
insulator. For such usage, earthing (grounding) terminals (D20) can be used by removing
shunt bar (D21).

All the parts of conductors and contacts are designed for their outline to reduce
electrical field strength so that high reliable insulation is obtained. The simple in-line
arrangement of three-phase rotary shaft and gas-tight shaft makes it compact and reliable.

1. Outline
The type MDD motor drive operating mechanism is used for remote operation of the
disconnecting switch or earthing switch for GIS. The operation, handling and the
maintenance methods are described for your correct operation and long time use.
2. Structure and Operation
The outline drawing is indicated in Figure 1, the mechanical locking device in Figure 2 and
the principle drawing in Figures 2 and 3.
2.1 Structure (Refer to Figure 1 Outline drawing and Figure 2 Principle drawing.)
・The position indicator (17) is connected to an gas-tight shaft (20) and indicates the Closed
positions of DS (disconnecting switch), Open position of DS and Closed position of
ES(earthing switch) .
・The shutter (4) can be opened only when the electrical interlock conditions are satisfied.
・Only when the shutter (4) is open, the manual operating handle (1) can be inserted to the
manual axis (3).
・The stopper lever (7) is the device for preventing pulling out of the manual operating
handle (1) during the manual operation.
・The mechanical lock pin (2) is the device for electrically and mechanically locking the
drive shaft of the operating mechanism, and prevent its operation to secure safety during
inspection or maintenance of the other part or equipment of the GIS.
・The selection knob(30) is the device for preventing mal-operation of the DS/ES, and
provided only for DS/ES before the manual operation. It is the device for selecting the
equipment to be operated, DS or ES.
2.2 Motion of the operating mechanism (Refer to Figure 2.3 Principle drawing.)
・The torque produced by the motor(8) or manual operating handle (1) is transferred to the
bevel gear (9) and rotates the intermitted gear (driving side) (10).
・The intermittent gear (11) (driven side) rotates the axes of the rotary type disconnecting
switch (DS) and earthing switch(ES) by rotating the gas-tight shaft (20), and by this
motion the main body operates, i.e. contacts of DS or ES operate.
At the final position of the motion, the limit switches (12), (13) and (23) operate, and the
control circuit of the motor (8) breaks,
・After the motor circuit breaks, the motor (8) continues to rotate by the inertia. In this
period, the driving force does not transferred to the contact of the DS because the
convex side of the intermitted gear (driving side) (10) is engaged with the concave side of
the intermitted gear (driven side)(11). This means Opening and Closing lock scheme is
automatically formed.
2.3 Safety Device
①Shutter
If the interlock condition with other equipment is satisfied, the plunger of the
electromagnetic interlock device (5) that locks the shutter (4) rotation releases it , and
the shutter (4) can be fully open. This means only when the interlock condition with
other equipment is satisfied, the shutter opens, and manual operation can be possible.
Furthermore, it is so designed as electric operation cannot be possible during manual

(7/16) HBN-E0015
operation.
②Manual handle holding function
This function gives preventing manual operation handle from taking out during
operation.
The manual operation handle (1) is held by a stopper lever(7) , so that the handle is
prevented from taking out during operation. The handle can be taken out at the position
the operation is completed.
③Electrical and Mechanical locking device
This is equipped with lock pin (2) that mechanically locks the drive shaft of the
operating mechanism to secure safety during inspection.
Locking /releasing operation can be done by inserting the mechanical lock pin (2) and
extracting it through the hole of shutter (4). It is so designed that electric operation
cannot be conducted when it is locked.
④Selection knob(only for disconnecting switch/earthing switch)
This is the device for preventing mal-operation of the DS/ES. This is equipped with a
selection knob(30) that selects the equipment to be operated DS or ES before the
manual
operation. By rotating the selection knob(30), DS or ES become operable.

3. Operation
3.1 Electric Operation
①When operation signal of Closed (Open) is incoming, the motor(M) circuit makes,
and the motor (8) starts to rotate. The gas-tight shaft(20) of the motor drive
operating mechanism rotates as indicated in the operation sequence in Section 2.
At the final position of the motion, the limit switches (89a, la,57a) operate, and the
motor control circuit breaks, and the motor (8) stops.
② Contacts (Sa) are equipped to prevent electric operation during manual operation.
③ Opened a contact (Sb) is equipped to prevent electric operation when the operating
mechanism is mechanically locked by the lock pin(2).

3.2 Manual Operation

① Matters to be ensured before manual operation
a) Ensure the state of circuit, open or closed, and also ensure that the interlock
conditions are satisfied. (Current making/breaking cannot be done by the
manual operation.)
b) Ensure the lock pin (2) should extract on manual axis(3).
② Procedures for manual operation
a) Move the shutter (4) in the arrow direction, and open the shutter (4) to final
position after ensuring that the plunger of the electromagnetic interlocking
device (5) operates, and insert a manual operation handle (1) to the manual axis
(3) , and rotate it. For the rotating direction, refer to the instruction nameplate.
b) Ensure Closed/Open positions
Continue rotating handle until the position indicator (17) changes until the
manual operation handle (1) becomes lighter .
Stop rotating when the stopper lever(7) opens fully.
If continue rotating beyond the proper position, it becomes suddenly heavy.
Do not rotate excessively or it might cause damage.
The manual operation handle (1) can be pulled out only at the final Closing or
Opening position.
c) After ensuring that operation is completed, remove the manual operation handle (1).

The outline drawing is indicated in Figure 1, the mechanical locking device in Figure 2 and
the principle drawing in Figure 2.
2.1 Structure (Refer to Figure 1, Outline drawing, and Figure 2, Principle drawing)
・The position indicator (23) is connected to output shaft (17) and indicates the position of
FES, Closed or Open.
・The shutter (4) can be opened only when the electrical interlock conditions are satisfied.
・Only when the shutter (4) is open, the manual operating handle (1) can be inserted to the
manual axis (3).
・The mechanical lock pin (2) is the device for electrically and mechanical locking the drive
shaft of the operating mechanism, and prevent its operation to secure safety during
inspection or maintenance of the other part or equipment of the GIS.
2.2 Operation (Refer to Figure 2 Principle drawing.)
・Rotation produced by the motor(8) or manual operating handle (1) is transferred to the
worm gear (13). The rotation is reduced with worm gear(10) and worm wheel(11).
・The rotation charges spiral spring (15) through 1st coupling cams with worm wheel(11) and
with charging lever(12). The spring is charged up to its compressed dead point and released
the energy. Then, output shaft(17) is rotated quickly by the releasing energy through 2nd
coupling cams with charging lever(12) and discharging cam(16).The rotation of the main shaft
drives auxiliary switches(22) and position indicator(23).
・By this motion, the axis of fault making earthing switch (FES) move, and the moving contact
of FES operates, i.e. FES operates at this moment.
・When the rotation of the lever(18) is stoped by oil dumper(19) and (20),auxiliary switch(22)
operate and the control circuit of motor (8) breaks.

2.3 Safety Device

①Shutter
The shutter(4) opens only when the interlock condition with other equipment is satisfied,
and manual operation can be done. If the interlock condition with other equipment is
satisfied, the plunger of the electromagnetic interlock device (5) that locks the shutter(4)
rotation releases it, and the shutter(4) can be fully open. Furthermore, it is so designed as
electric operation cannot be possible during manual operation.

(7/14) HBN-E0002
②Electrical and Mechanical locking device
This is equipped with lock pin (2) that mechanically locks the drive shaft of the
operating mechanism to secure safety during inspection.
Locking /releasing operation can be done by inserting the mechanical lock pin (2) and
extracting it through the hole of shutter (4). It is so designed that electric operation
cannot be conducted when it is locked.

Description and Instruction for Installation KB000684 REV.0 20-07-2006 KW 2

3.2) Design against ferroresonance (additional equipment)

Ferroresonance can occur in network (substation) by circuit breaker switching and if

there are no special precautions the resulting thermal or dielectric stress can affect or
even destroy the transformer. To prevent such a behaviour, an air gap in the magnetic
core is designed to create the transformer ferroresonance-free (main inductance
drastically reduced).

3.3) Encapsulation

The encapsulation consits of the housing, cover and high-voltage insulator so that the
whole transformer is hermetically sealed.

3.3.1) Housing and cover

The housing, cover and its components is a common steel construction, which is spray-
zinced galvanized and additionally covered with a spezial protective paint.

3.3.2) High-voltage insulator

The high-voltage insulator, which is made of cast resign, is dimensiond for insulation by
SF6-gas. It is bolted to the coupling flange of the housing and seals the transformer
housing.

3.4) Secondary terminal box

The ends of the secondary windings and the neutral ends of the high voltage windings are
led into the terminal box via multi-bushing. The multi-bushing is mechanically separated
from the terminal box. The terminals for the IID-control are also located in this terminal
box. Torque moment for cover screws 2Nm.
For reference see the resp. terminal box drawing.
