Let us understand Sustainability

Sustainability, in its literal sense, is the avoidance of the depletion of natural

resources in order to maintain an ecological balance. It focuses on meeting the
needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet
their needs. The concept of sustainability is composed of three pillars: economic,
environmental, and social—also known informally as profits, planet, and people.

But what lies beyond this definition is of a lot more relevance than the mere outline
of this term. In order to work in synergy with the environment towards a sustainable
future, L'Oréal is back with the fourth edition of the L’Oréal Sustainability Challenge
2020.

What L’Oréal has done so far

From 2013 to 2020, L’Oréal reinvented its way of doing business, transitioning to a
more sustainable business model, mitigating the environmental impact and
maximizing the positive contribution to society at large.

By the end of 2019, L’Oréal had already reduced the CO2 emissions of factories and
distribution centres by 78% compared to 2005, while the volume of production
increased by 37% over the same period.

And this is not all. In 2019, L’Oréal also improved the environmental/social profile of
85% of new or renovated products. Through the social inclusion programs, including
the Solidarity Sourcing program, L’Oréal has also helped 90,635 people from
disadvantaged communities gain access to employment.

What L’Oréal aims to achieve this year:

L’Oréal is always looking out for ideas and innovations that have the power to
revolutionize the way L’Oréal products impact the environment and simultaneously
instill within its consumers an awareness that makes them look out for the
environment, change their daily habits and work towards establishing a sustainable
world.

With an overarching climate change objective for 2030, the aim is to align L’Oréal’s
greenhouse gas emissions to the +1.5°C scenario. All greenhouse gas emissions will
be reduced by 50% per finished product.

To achieve this goal, L’Oréal has set numerical targets for every aspect of its
activities to include production and distribution facilities and the raw material supply
chain and the indirect impacts associated with the use of L’Oréal products by their
final consumers.
To accelerate the efforts towards making a positive contribution to the society,
L’Oréal has pledged to allocate an amount of 150 million Euros to address urgent
social and environmental needs.

What L’Oréal needs from you.

greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the use of its products.

Keep in mind that the solution presented must be in line with the following aspects:
a. Consumer Awareness
b. Change in consumer behaviour (Usage and Disposal, end to end)
c. Ideas to nudge consumers to reduce greenhouse emissions
d. Summarise the impact of your idea in terms of saving in Carbon, Water,
Plastic, Land or Trees.

Submit a one-slider executive summary of your idea. All other details are available
on the official website of this challenge.
