My Own Curriculum Development

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT 2

After and evaluation and analyzing of the curriculum models, the one that provides the

more participation of teachers in the curriculum development process is the Taba model. This

model preferred that classroom teachers originates the process instead of higher officials. In

addition, teachers are responsible for the development of pilot units that represent the target

grade level and the implementation and test of the unit. Under this model, teachers revise and

modify the units for their adaptation to abilities, styles, and resources. As stated in the

presentation, the role of teachers is pivotal to start the process.

The model that provides more participation of students in the curriculum development

process is the Tyler model. This model should be focused and based in the constant changes and

experiences of students’ life. According to this model, the objectives of the curriculum is guided

by the personal needs of the students, their needs in the society, and the subject matter they

should know. In other words, the learning experiences of students determine the success of the

objectives.

If I were a curriculum developer, I would prefer the Saylor, Alexander, and Lewis

model. In this model, curriculum developers create and guide the planning process of the

curriculum including all of the elements and components. After the implementation by the

teachers, developers are responsible for the evaluation of the curriculum and makes

modifications and changes with the contribution of teachers. Under this model, curriculum

developers participate in the fundamental phases of the curriculum development, which are the

creation and planning and evaluation/modification.

Referring to the curriculum development models, my model would integrate different

elements from the Tyler, Taba, and Saylor, Alexander, and Lewis models. From the Tyler model,

my curriculum would be based and focused in the needs and interest of students in all aspects.

This would help with the creation and implementation of a curriculum that will satisfy the

necessities of students being effective and successful. As a teacher, I would originate the

curriculum from objectives to assessments creating units that could be revised and adapted to the

learning styles and abilities of students and to the available resources. In this way, the curriculum

could be more productive, adequate, and improved to according to the content or grade level.

From the Saylor, Alexander, and Lewis models, my curriculum would include the four domains

of personal development, social competence, continued learning skills, and specialization.

Through the application of these domains, the curriculum would guide students to a complete

educational and professional path. As my own, the curriculum would include initial and final

assessments to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of the curriculum. The activities

would be focused in the improvements of students’ abilities and skills such as critical thinking.

The inclusion of differentiated instruction would be important to satisfy the needs of students

with special needs and/or incapacities.
