Spelling Bee Competition (2019-20): STD 1 & 2

Dear Parents
Here are the details regarding the upcoming Spelling Bee Competition. You will
have to familiarize yourself and your child with –

Words for the Competition:

Children will be asked to spell only words that all of them at the level are
familiar with.

Preliminary Round (WRITTEN)

Date: Tuesday, 28th January

The Contest:
1. The preliminary round will be held in the child’s class.
2. The children have to write down the words that are called out by the
teacher.
3. The best three (3) will qualify for the final round.
4. In case of a tie, yet another round of dictation will be given to determine
the qualifying children.
5. The list of finalists will be announced by mail.

Final Round (ORAL)

Date: Tuesday, 4th February

The Contest:
1. The children selected for the final round will have to orally spell the
words that are called out by the judge.

2. The procedure –
(i) the child repeats the word called out by the judge
(ii) then the child spells the word slowly
(iii) the child completes by telling the word again.
e.g.:
Judge: Spell ‘mother’
Child: ‘mother’ – m.o.t.h.e.r – ‘mother’
This will ensure that the judge hears clearly what the child
says.
3. The children will be ranked based on the number of words they spell
correctly.
4. The judge’s decision will be final and binding.
