How to be a good citizen Part 1


MOTHER TERESA.
Mother Teresa was the founder of the Missionaries of Charity, a catholic congregation of
women dedicated to helping poor people. She was born on 26th August 1910, in Skopje,
Macedonia. Her real name is Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.

When she was 12, she decided that she will have a religious life. At the age of 18 she
joined the ‘Sisters of Loreto’ as a missionary. She became a nun on 24th May 1931.

In 1950 she started the congregation that would become the Missionaries of Charity. It
began as a small congregation with 13 members in Calcutta and nowadays it is a
congregation with 4000 sisters in 123 countries. This congregation help poor people,
disabled, alcoholics, victims of epidemics, natural disasters, etc.
Mother Teresa die don 13th March 1997.

NELSON MANDELA.
Mandela became the first black president of South Africa in 1994. He’ s a symbol of global
peacemaking. Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, in Mveso, South Africa. His birth
name is Rolihlahla. He got the nickname Nelson from a teacher in school. Mandela got his law
degree, he got married (three times), and he had six children and twenty grandchildren. He
directed a campaign of peaceful, nonviolent defiance against the South African government
and its racist policies. He joined the African National Congress, a movement against the
oppression of black people.

He planned to bomb certain buildings, but only the buildings. He wanted to make sure that no
one would be hurt. He was classified as a terrorist by the South African government and sent
to prison. Mandela would spend the next 27 years in prison. He wanted all people of all races
to have equal rights in South Africa. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

MAHATMA GANDHI
Mahatma Gandhi was the primary leader of India’s Independence movement and also the
architect of a form of non-violent civil disobedience that would influence the world. He
was born on 2nd October 1869, in Porbandar, India. Gandhi studied law advocated for the civil
rights of Indians. He got married and he had three children. Gandhi participated in different
passive protests against racism and discrimination and he always promoted non-violence to
resist oppression. In South Africa, he became involved in efforts to end discrimination
against the Indian minority there. He was assassinated by a Hindu nationalist in Delhi on
January 30, 1948, and India mourned the loss of its greatest hero.

MARTIN LUTHER KING


Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist minister and social activist, who led the Civil Rights
Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968.
Martin Luther King was born on 15th January 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. He organised and led
marches to protest against injustice. He wrote books and articles and his most famous
speech is ‘I have a dream’. After getting his degree in sociology, Martin got his doctor's
degree in theology from Boston University. He hoped that America and the world could
become a colorblind society where race would not impact a person's civil rights. He is
considered one of the great orators of modern times, and his speeches still inspire many to
this day. Martin Luther King was assassinated on 4th April 1968 in Memphis.
