The Catholic Social Teaching

“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every
day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to satisfy his hunger
with what fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. The poor man
died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In
Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his
side. He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in
water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that
during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is
comforted here, and you are in agony. Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been
fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from
there to us.’ He said, ‘Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father’s house— for I have five brothers
—that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.’ Abraham replied,
‘They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.’ He said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if
someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses
and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead’ (Lk 16:19-31).”

REFLECTION/DISCUSSION

1. Identify the different character in the story and translate them as to what do they
represent in our present time today.
-The modern-day Lazarus is the people who are suffering now a day because of the
pandemic, they are suffering because there is no food to eat and to feed to their families. The
modern-day rich man is corrupted politicians, they benefit the money that came from the
government and they spent it their good. They don't help poor people who badly need their
attention. The modern-day Abraham is the church that fighter for human rights and helping those
people who deserved to be helped. The modern-day Moses is the leader of the nation where he
sacrifice his self for the sake of people.
2. What is your personal understanding of the “Separation of the Church and State”?
(Please answer this before your research by discussing among your members.

-In my personal understanding about "Separation of the church and the state", I think it
is concept of political distance wherein the relationship between religious organization and the
state are being isolated. In addition, the separation of the church and state occurs because there
is a law or agreement that can't be approvable by two separate constitutions. In a matter of fact,
some of the churches and states are on argumentation because they are not on the same way of
thinking.

-Separation of church and state gives the legal right of a free people to freely bring their
religions in public. Also the religious and politics in society is distinct. Separation of church and
state gives the legal right of a free people to freely bring their religions in public. Also the
religious and politics in society is distinct. But the goal of religious organization or the church was
to protect the dignity and the rights of every person living in the society and have a peaceful life.
