Analog Clock

Analog Clock Sample

Analog Clock
I usually like to begin my unit on time by having my students make their own
clocks. We then refer to these clocks throughout our subsequent lessons. I have
found that creating clocks, rather than simply handing my students a premade clock,
keeps them more motivated and helps my kinesthetic and visual learners as well. I
hope you find this resource as useful in your classroom as I have in mine!

Directions:
1. Begin by activating students background knowledge. Discuss
what students already know about clocks and time. (ie: A clock
has numbers, a minute hand, hour hand, etc…)
2. Have students cut and paste the clock onto a sheet of
construction paper.
3. In the squares located around the clock have students fill in the
minutes counting by 5’s. I like to write the minutes the way the
students will see them on a digital clock (ie- :00, :05, :10, :15)
4. Discuss how the clock can be divided into fourths or quarters (My
class has usually learned about fractions and measurement by
now, so they are able to see the connection more easily.)

Use this time to introduce the term “quarter after” and “quarter
to”.
5. Discuss how the clock can also be divided in half. Next, have the
students color in each half of the clock a different color. This will
come in handy in future lessons. Introduce the term “half past”
and how a half hour equals 30 minutes.
6. As you continue to teach your students about the clock, have
them glue the rectangle that says “_________ min. after _________”
to the right side of your clock. Explain how this can be used to
remind them of another form of reading the clock. For example, if
the time is 6:10 they can say ”10 min. after 6”. Next, have them
glue the rectangle that says “_________ min. before _________” to
the left side of the clock. Explain how this is also to remind them of
another way of reading the clock. For example, if the time is 7:50
they can say “10 min. before 8”.
7. A minute and hour hand have been
provided so that they can be
attached to the clock using a
brad fastener. It is best to print these
hands on thicker cardstock paper
for durability.
