English speech: Myths and Heroes

A hero can be a real person or a fictional character. He usually is selfless, care about the others
and save them without any expectations or rewards in return -even if his life is on the line.
Throughout the decades many genres of heroes have surfaced such as: superheroes, tragic
heroes, classical heroes, epic heroes, anti-heroes, everyday heroes and many more... Nevertheless
the definition of hero never seems to stay the same; it has shifted from an all mighty character to
a more realistic and lifelike hero. We consequently as ourselves: Do heroes still affect people
these days? We’ll start off by saying how everybody needs a hero, someone to help them climb
a mountain or push through the difficult times. We’ll then show how many heroes inspire us to
push our limits and be better versions of ourselves. Lastly, we’ll talk about how heroes can guide
us and light pathways in front of us.

Ever since the beginning of spoken stories, tribes would gather around fires to hear the feats of
knights and heroes to raise their spirits. To this very day, people are still fascinated by similar
stories and tales like Robin Hood, King Arthur or even Saint George.
Initially, Heroes reveal our missing qualities. They educate us about right and wrong.  Most
fairytales and children’s stories show kids the kind of behaviors that are needed to succeed in
life, to be better in society, and to overcome villainy.  It is during youth that we are the most
affected and need good, healthy adult role models who demonstrate exemplary behavior.
Although, adults need heroic models as well. Many superheroes only started as drawings on
blank papers but ended up being internationally known classics that inspire the younger and
older generations. For instance, take the whole Marvel universe: Captain America, Iron Man,
Black Widow and many more have become iconic inspirations and motivations for the whole age
range up to this day.
Furthermore, most people aim to become like their heroes -may they be fictional or real. They
aspire to better themselves and make others happy. Heroes show people how to be selfless, how
to do the right thing and spread joy. That’s why ,nowadays, anyone can be a hero either be it by
helping a homeless person or a struggling child or family. Many means can be used with today’s
technology to reach millions of people, such as social media. For exmple, Malala Yousafzai
spread her voice through the entire world with television speeches. Even after an attempt to end,
not only her revolutionary movement but her life, she persisted. She won the 2014 Nobel Peace
Prize and opened a school in her hometown in the Swat Valley. That is why, heroes are essencial
to our community. They draw out the best in every and each one of us, helping us make a
difference and not lose hope.
We can say in addition, that heroes pick us up when we are down. These days, the world is
generally a troubled place with warfare, poverty, famine, unrest and inequality. Life inevitably
hands us personal setbacks and failuress who can break our morals and principles. For this
reason, heroes are repeatedly needed. They are beacons of light amidst this vast darkness.
Heroes prove to us that no matter how much suffering there is in this world, there are supremely
good people around whom we can count on. They are proof that after the rain, indeed comes the
sun. Take for exemple Angelina Jolie, Leonardo Dicaprio and Mark Ruffalo: 3 former actors
who used their fame and money to become environmentalists, to help fight climate change. They
visited over 30 countries each and fought along side the citizens of the villages. These people are
role models and heroes to many youngsters, they help forge their mindset and build their
characters. They take up a major part in everybody’s lives, that’s why we still need them around,
even after all these years.

All things considered, heroes still have a big effect in today’s society. They pass down virtues
and values throught the ancient stories. Those idols encourage us to grow and to educate
ourselves. Anyone can change for the good and become a hero. My own view on the matter
would be that heroes are undeniably important to anyone struggling but we ought not to forget or
turn our backs to the people around us who support us and are there for us. Putting someone on a
pedestal and idolising him too much can turn into an obsession and can hurt both ends of the
party. Because, after all, too much light can blind us.
