Unit 5.

Basic Presentation Skills

Assignment

A family owned medium-sized garment manufacturing firm had established retail outlets in
Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad a few years ago. The business was growing consistently.
However, their sales dropped during the lockdown. They decided to start online marketing and
sales. Although none of the management staff had any knowledge of online business nor good IT
knowledge, they had heard that more and more businesses had been going online successfully,
both locally and internationally. They decided to hire an IT graduate.
The HR department advertised for the post, scanned the CVs, interviewed the candidates and
short-listed 3 of them. The 3 candidates were told to make final presentations to the management
committee on how they would start, establish and run the online business successfully. One of
the candidates was your friend, Shams Bhatti.
Bhatti was a gold medalist. He prepared very comprehensive presentation slides and included the
technical terms like Artificial Intelligence, Contextual Marketing, Cost Per Acquisition (CPA),
Hyperlocal, Keyword Proximity, Keyword Stemming, Keyword Density, Latent Semantic
Indexing (LSI), Lookalike Audiences, Lost Impression Share (Budget) & Lost Impression Share
(Rank), Quality Score, Aggregation, Analytics, Anchor Text, Algorithm Update, Bot, Click-
Through-Rate (CTR), B2B, B2C, Churn Rate, Closed-Loop Marketing, Conversion Path,
Conversion Rate, Hosting, Server Requirements, etc. He was satisfied that his state-of-the-art
presentation would make a decisive impression on the management team.
During his presentation, most of the management team members were yawning. Bhatti “knew”
that his presentation was technically quite extraordinary and that he had covered “each and every
technical point.” In short, he was sure that he had impressed the management team. However, he
didn’t receive any call from the firm even after one week. He called the HR manager who told
him that another more competent candidate was hired. Bhatti wondered – what had gone wrong?

Your task:
1. Analyze the situation and list the mistakes that Shams Bhatti had committed.
2. What steps should he have taken to make his presentation more effective?
