Answer the following questions:

1. Why is it important to study the history of education?

 First, the history of education is important it is defined as a process of teaching

and learning and it also includes here the education systems institution, theories,

theme, and other related phenomena.

 We have noted that the study deals primarily with the past events and

developments in education and when you study the past, you can understand the

process of education and how it evolved up to the present.

 Note that as a teacher, you are a change agent so learning the history of

education will prepare teachers in training to examine present trends and

dynamics in education, draw practical lessons from the past, avoid possible

mistakes and initiate more viable plans for the benefit of society. Studying of

history of education as a discipline develops the power of thinking.

2. What is consensus theory?

 Consensus theory is a social theory that holds a particular political or economic

system is a fair system, and that social change should take place within the
social institutions provided by it. Consensus theory contrasts sharply with conflict

theory, which holds that social change is only achieved through conflict.

 Consensus Theory in Education is likely to support a differentiated type of

education and educational opportunities for the different categories of people.

Finally, Consensus theorists believe that education is likely to be conservative in

order to maintain the status quo and stability in society.

 Consensus decision-making or consensus politics (often abbreviated to

consensus) refers to group decision-making processes in which participants

develop and decide on proposals with the aim, or requirement, of acceptance by

all.

3. What is conflict theory?

 Conflict Theory, developed by Karl Marx, purports that due to society’s never-

ending competition for finite resources, it will always be in a state of conflict. This

theory implies that those in possession of wealth and resources will protect and

hoard those resources, while those without will do whatever they can to obtain

them. This dynamic means there is a constant struggle between the rich and the

poor.

 What Does Conflict Theory Attempt to Explain? Conflict theory examines any

social phenomenon through the lens that there is a natural human instinct

towards conflict. Marx is not saying that conflict is good or bad, but instead that it
is an unavoidable aspect of human nature and helps explain why things are the

way they are.

 For example, conflict theory can be used to look at wars, violence, revolutions,

and forms of injustice and discrimination by explaining that there is a natural

disparity in society that causes these problems.

4. Why is symbolic interactionist theory important to consider in education?

 By looking at the small scale, symbolic interactionism explains the individual in a

society and their interactions with others. And through that, it can explain social

order and change. It gives a different aspect to sociology that is essential for fully

understanding a society. It is capable of explaining how features of society can

change as they are created and re-created by social interactions.

 How a child grows, improve, and change sometimes depends on the people that

surrounds him/her especially interacting with the teacher who gives them

knowledge and enlightenment and also to every student that communicates with

him/her.
