Social and Cultural Globalization

The cultural and social patterns of globalization are important when it comes to

international relations, and they will be discussed throughout this essay. Globalization has

different patterns such as economic, ecological, security, legal, cultural, and social. First of all,

there needs to be a clear definition of what a cultural pattern in globalization looks like. There is

also a difference and a relation between the social and cultural patterns, that need to be defined to

be able to understand more clearly what each one of them really is. There is a great significance

in understanding that each nation-state has different sets of cultures and social patterns that have

been changing through history. The two that will be discussed in this essay will be the social and

cultural patterns that first need to be understood separately, so that later one may understand their

difference.

The social globalization pattern focuses on the people, the way the families and societies

live together in different nation-states. “Concerns and issues are often raised about the impact of

globalization on employment, working conditions, income and social protection” (Ilo.Org,

2003). Such issues are always important in any nation-state, because these affect each one of the

people that make it up. International relations are important for such issues because there are

organizations that try to make overall working conditions for legal companies to follow, these

conditions are made by the International Labour Organization. Some of the conditions they

include subjects such as: collective bargaining, employment security, wages, working time, work

and family measures, and others (Ilo.Org, 2016). All these measures help to protect the people

and families that live in each nation-state. “Cultural globalization, a phenomenon by which the

experience of everyday life, as influenced by the diffusion of commodities and ideas, reflects a

standardization of cultural expressions around the world” (Watson, James L). Culture includes

many different aspects such as: food, values, language, practices, common sense, and others.

When a group of people share these different aspects, it is known as their culture. As the world

has continued to globalize, different cultures have also globalized. It is easier for people around

the world to adopt different cultures, even though they are not living in the same place, this is an

effect of globalization.

On my skill development I think I grew in different aspects, such as reading, writing, and

research skills. I had to grow on my research skills to be able to find the right information to

complete my essay. To find the right information I had to learn how to read the right things, so

that I didn’t waste my time. I used the theories we studied in class to be able to write this essay.

Finally, I enjoyed writing this essay, and I hope for the next two I do even better.
