UNIT 2 - SUBJECT EVALUATION

GRAMMAR AND CONVENTIONS IN ACADEMIC WRITING

(GCAW)

The student has three opportunities to pass the unit (Ordinary call, Resit 1 and Resit 2). The
following contains information on each call. Please read the following document carefully.

ORDINARY CALL:

The subject’s evaluation includes the following evaluation activities:

EVALUATION ACTIVITIES PERCENTAGE OF THE

FINAL GRADE
Final task 50 %

Exam 50 %

It is mandatory to complete all the activities to pass the subject. The minimum passing grade is
7/10. Besides, if a student has received a passing grade in the subject, they are not allowed to
resubmit evaluation activities for a better grade.

Access to submit assignments and tests in the VC

Access to submit assignments and tests in the VC is not permanently open.

Students must submit both evaluation activities on the official date of delivery (the day
indicated in the academic calendar). However, the submission access in VC opens three days
before that date for those students who want to submit earlier.

Access is kept open a few days longer, but only for those students who have been granted an
extension by the professor. Assignments or test that are submitted after the deadline without this
extension (extraordinary authorization by the professor granted in advance) will not be
evaluated.

Final task (50% of the final grade):

The final task must be done individually. Details of the assignment are provided in the “Final
task” template available in the subject’s “Evaluation” section and in the instructions sent to the
group forum by the teacher. The assignment must respect all the formal requirements detailed
in the template. In order to submit the final task, follow these steps:

1. Click on the “Final task” icon (available in the subject’s “Evaluation” section).

2. Accept the submission conditions and click on the “Add submission” button found in the
lower central part.

1
3. Next, drag and drop the final task's file in “You can drag and drop files to add them” space
(in the “File submissions” section).

4. Once the file has been uploaded, click on “Save changes”.

5. To confirm the submission, click on “Submit assignment” and then “Continue”.

It is essential that students strictly follow point 5 since, if you do not, the task will be registered
as "Draft (not submitted)” and the teacher will not correct it. Students need to make sure the
status is "Submitted for grading".

In case of not following these steps correctly and, therefore, not sending the work correctly, it
will be the responsibility of the student and will have to wait for the next call to complete the
submission.

All students are expected to upload it on its official deadline (date set in the group’s academic
calendar), though if desired, it can be posted in advance, due to the fact that access is activated
three days before the exam due date. Access may be activated past the due date for exceptional
cases with teacher approval. Such cases must be communicated in advance. Assignments sent
after the deadline, without the teacher’s consent, will not be evaluated. CAUTION: each
student must send the group’s assignment to be graded.

On top of this, final tasks must always be sent appropriately identified:

* The students’ first name initial and first surname.

* The group number.
* The unit name’s initials.

For example:

Students: Samuel López and Rosa Sallán

Group: 2019-06
Subject: Grammar and Conventions in Academic Writing (GCAW)
The right file name would be: 2019-06SLópezRSallán_GCAW

Tasks not following these rules will not be accepted.

Test-type exam (50% of the final grade):

The test is located in the Evaluation section of the subject, within the Exam icon, and it consists
of 20 multiple choice questions that students must answer in 3 consecutive hours. Once this
time expires, access to the test closes.

In order to take the test, follow these steps:

1. Click the “Exam” icon (available in the subject’s “Evaluation” section).

2. Click on “Me comprometo a completar la evaluación con aportaciones originales y propias,

sin cometer plagio”. By activating this plagiarism disclaimer, you declare that all the work you
might attach to the test is fully yours and does not rely on uncited sources.

2
3. Next, click “Attempt quiz now” and “Start attempt”. We recommend that the students only
click this button if they are very sure that they are academically prepared to answer the
questions, have enough time to complete them, and feel under the best possible conditions.
After the click, all 20 questions are uploaded and students can begin to answer. Then, the three
consecutive hours starts counting. The time counter is available under the left side navigation
menu by the questionnaire.

The answer saves automatically when the student clicks on the answer they believe to be
correct. After answering all the questions, the student must click on the “Next” button to submit
the test and will immediately see the status of all the questions (answer, saved or not yet
answered). The student must make sure that they have answered all questions. It is still possible
to modify answers at this point. When the student is sure that the test is finished, they must click
on the “Submit all and finish” button (the system will require confirmation).

ATTENTION: If you do not click on the “Submit all and finish” button, the test will not be
sent, and therefore, it will not count as being submitted (with all the academic consequences this
might imply).

We do not recommended abandoning the test before finishing it. However, if a student must
stop for a while, they must check that all answers have been correctly saved. It is possible to
check this in the “Quiz navigation” menu, on the top left side of the screen. Questions with a
grey-like shadow have been answered and saved.

On the other hand, remember that time keeps running even if you exit the exam. To resume the
test, go to the Exam icon, and click “Continue the last attempt”.
