Feb. 6 It was 7:59 in the morning when I arrived at the firm. My classmates were already
and 8 there too sitting in front of the front desk waiting for instructions and assignments so
did I. Nestor volunteered to be in the front desk. Madam Ethyl, the person assigned
to us asked who would like to be in the supervisors’ office but no one answered so I
raised my hand and volunteered. At first, it was awkward sitting inside the office
surrounded by unknown personnel. I greeted them actually and answered some of
their questions about me and facts about my schooling. After some moments of
silence, I was relieved when Madam Ethyl asked the supervisors, Madam Ebeng and
Sir Dumagan of sending another trainee in their office then I saw Cherry. I bet she
felt the same feeling of awkwardness too upon entering the room. The whole
morning was completely boring. Why? It was in just that day we knew that the firm
is not what we quite expected. Madam Ebeng told us that the firm’s peek time is
usually on the month of January, so it will be calm and quiet business for the rest of
the months. Inside me, I felt sad because I expected so much work and to the fact
that I was not used of not doing anything. So we sat whole morning and waited for
assignments. It was in the afternoon when we had our free meryenda and nilagang
saging. Also, we were able to write one of their Daily Time Records. It was a small
assignment but it satisfied me so much. We logged out at exactly 5PM.

On my second day, it was a wonderful experience because I was able to celebrate the
birthday of our supervisor, Mr. Dumagan, together with the firm’s employees. The
whole day went silent and okay.

Feb. 13 Our supervisors Mdm. Ebeng and Sir Dumagan were very talkative and
and 15 approachable especially Mdm. Ebeng. She bought us food so we can eat with her
and asked if we’re okay. Ms. Honey and Mdm. Joy on the other hand enjoyed
chatting with our supervisors. While I and Cherry waited for further work, I grabbed
some newspapers and sometimes work with my notes at school.

Our day was quite alright but still boring. Finally, I asked Mdm. Ebeng if we could
go to our friends outside the office and she said yes. However, walking inside the
firm was uneasy because employees’ eyes were always watching. I don’t know if
that’s just what they do whenever someone walks in front of them and anywhere in
the office or they really do it in purpose. One thing I know was it makes me feel
uneasy. I feel relieved when I got by my friends’ table. I had a little chitchat with
them about school and other stuffs.

Feb. 20, We were all busy because exam is on Wednesday and Friday. Though we had
22 and 23 reviewed on class with our teacher, it would still be better if we study hard about
class lectures and notes by ourselves. I figured I will study notes in Marketing and
Understanding Culture, Society and Politics (UCSP) at the firm. So I did. I brought
my laptop and binder. It was a productive day for me because I finished studying
Chapter 1 and 2 of Marketing.

It was Thursday and I was still studying at that day. Some of the employees said that
our group was studious. It was a good compliment actually and I just smiled at some
of the employees. My day ended productive too because I almost finished my
Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions (CPAR) lessons.

Friday wasn’t so bad but a bit tiring. After taking the examination, we went directly
to the firm still wearing our uniform. It was an awkward entrance for it was our first
time to enter the firm wearing a uniform as an OJT trainee.

Feb. 27 Today was the earliest time I logged in to the firm. I arrived five minutes after clock
and stroke 7. The day went well. We had our lunch together with my group and stayed
March 1 there until 5 in the afternoon. Ma’am Ethyl was a bit cheeky because as I walked in
front of her desk holding my laptop, she exclaimed and asked, “When will be your
flight?” At first, I hesitated to think it was a joke or a compliment until she giggled
and said “Joking.” The employees were all approachable and I guess there would be
no problem up to the end of our OJT days.

I and the group began our day laughing and talking about school stuffs. To make the
rest of the day not boring, I asked Madam Ebeng if I and Cherry could stay with our
friends’ designated place and fortunately she said yes. So both of us enjoyed the
company with our friends. The day ended alright.

March 6 Today was the end of our On-The-Job Training. I arrived at the firm exactly 7:25 in
the morning. It was a wonderful day not just because I’ll be able to complete my 80
working hours but because I arrived at the firm early and feeling okay. I studied my
lessons in Marketing for our quiz the next day. The day was silent except on
noontime. I wasn’t able to eat lunch because unfortunately I forgot to bring with me
my baon but it was so good of Grizalee, my co-trainee, to give me some of her
baon. In the afternoon we prepared our food for the employees. It was a simple yet
delicious gathering. We prepared three balots of bihon gisado, one jelly roll, four
loaf breads and four soft drinks. It felt genuine the time I saw how employees
smiled, laughed and enjoyed the food we prepared. The whole afternoon was funny.
Grizalee took a video or “live streaming” as she called it while the employees were
busy for the food we prepared. I acted as the field reporter, Cherry as my
interviewee and Ima as the Chairman or “ang may pakana ng lahat (including the
pakain)”. After the small gathering, we arranged the remaining utensils and foods on
the table. We then stayed at the back of the firm and chatted there. All of us thought
everything is already settled until Ima was called on the office. Our giggles and
laughters stopped when Ima told us Roselyn is next to enter the office for the
interview. It all startled us so we prepared a little extra for possible questions. Each
one of us did great during the interview. The day kept me thinking that this will be
my final day of being a trainee for this school year. I learned that being a trainee is
indeed not that easy. One should know how to manage his or her time and accept
that there must be some sacrifices in order to comply with the required working
hours. I was also thankful for having this kind of experience. Through this, I was
able to feel, observe and know what it takes to be an employee someday. At least I
learned things, already tried to walk in the office like an employee, sit like an
employee, talked like an employee and took roles as an employee. Someday, in
God’s perfect time I’d look back on my OJT days and actually learn from it one way
or another.
