Dear Mr. Drozdowski,

As a part of our Career Development class, one of the projects we had to complete was job
shadowing. This is where we had to go on a type of on-the-job training that allows an interested employee
to follow and closely observe another employee performing the role. I job-shadowed one of my father's
colleagues, who was in the field of IT consulting. This was a very valuable experience as it allowed me to
gain deeper insights into a career that I am keen on pursuing.

One would expect a workplace to be extremely formal, however this was and was not the case.
When there was an important conference in place with higher executives, extremely formal speech was
used and everyone was on their top behavior. However, when people were at their own desks, they were
quite casual. They cracked jokes and were not really all that formal. In fact, it was almost like two friends
talking over the phone.

To start off the day, I met the person I was shadowing at the entrance, as I did not have access to
the building. He signed in and we started off by getting a cup of coffee to keep us energized for the day.
After that, I pulled a chair along his desk and started taking notes and watched him do his work. He
started off by setting up his calendar and planning what tasks he had to finish today. Once he finished that
he opened up his computer and went through his mails, flagging the important ones. After making sure he
was caught with all the information, he opened up an excel spreadsheet and started filling out data
regarding cost analysis of the people they were going to hire and interview. Then he was called to a
meeting in the conference room, however, I was not allowed to go inside but from what I could see, they
were having a serious and formal discussion. At that point, it was lunch, all the day's work was finished,
and we headed back on our own ways.

The workplace was a very clean and maintained environment. It was also quite crowded.
Everyone had designated desks and assigned rooms for meetings with higher level personnel. There was a
well-stocked and healthy cafeteria on each floor that gave small pieces of nutritional food and beverages
such as coffee and tea in case someone was feeling tired during work. The workplace also seemed very
productive, as everyone had calendars setup with daily goals which were being crossed off at a high rate.
Besides being maintained it was also quite noisy. Although everyone had designated desks, they weren’t
all that separated and were open. It was possible to hear every discussion and every phone call. If I was to
work here in the future, I would not mind it. I find it quite nice to work in a clean environment as well as
a somewhat noisy environment as it extinguishes the feeling of loneliness and helps to have a social life.

This experience gave me a hands-on view on a job that I may be pursuing in the future. It allowed
me a way to learn a lot of valuable skills and lessons. One of the main things I learned was how to
communicate with higher level personnel and my colleagues. It also showed me how to dress
appropriately and how to act in a professional yet friendly manner. It was a very exciting and important
experience which has helped me further narrow down my career options into deciding where I finally
want to end up.

Sincerely,

Mehul Aggarwal
