Beliefs about the
Nature of Mathematics
• Mathematics is natural
• The empirical nature of mathematics
• People do mathematics naturally

• Mathematics exists independent of us

• We can perform experiments, explore, and investigate
• We can test ideas and decide for ourselves

• Experience precedes formality

• “Meaning” is determined by experience
• Definitions and theorems are capstones
• Language is a tool for coming to terms with experience

• Mathematics is the study of structure

• Operations, order
• Shape
• Continuity
• Transformation

• Mathematics is the art of figuring things out

Mathematics in the Modern World
• Course Description:
• This course deals with nature of mathematics, appreciation of its practical,
intellectual, and aesthetic dimensions, and application of mathematical tools
in daily life.
• Introduction to the nature of mathematics as an exploration of patterns ( in
nature and the environment) and as an application of inductive and
deductive reasoning.
• Mathematics as a tool for understanding and dealing with various aspects of
present day living (managing personal finances, making social choices,
appreciating geometric designs, understanding codes used in data
transmission and security, and dividing limited resources
fairly.
Learning Outcomes (Expectations)

• Knowledge
• *discuss and argue about the nature of math, what it is, how it is expressed,
represented and used.
• *use different types of reasoning to justify statements and arguments made
about mathematics and mathematical concepts.
• *discuss the language and symbols of mathematics.
• Skills
• *use a variety of statistical tools to process and manage numerical data.
• *analyze codes and coding schemes used for identification, privacy and
security purposes.
• *use math in other areas such as finance, voting, health and medicine,
business, environment, arts and design, and recreation.
• Values

Nature of Mathematics
What is mathematics?

• Manipulating Numbers to solve problems

• Other subjects need math
• Language, tool for a set of standards
• More then a subject, prerequisite for everything
What’s the point in teaching it?
• To give students problem solving tools
• Continue advancement of technology
• So people can understand it
• To communicate
• To function in society, applicable to real life
• Learning to think in a different way
• Important life skills you need to know
• Continue learning
• Leopold Kronecker once said: "The natural
numbers come from God, everything else is man's
work." Do you agree with this statement? Why or
why not?
Mathematics in our World
