_____________________________________________________________________
Notes : 1. All questions carry equal marks.
2. Answer any five questions.
3. Illustrate your answers wherever necessary with the help of neat sketches.

1. a) Develop the transfer function for liquid level single tank system. 8

b) First order reaction A B is carried out in a reactor. The volume of the reactor is 1.5m3. 8
The inlet feed rate is 1.5m3/min. The rate constant of the reaction is 0.8 min-1. The steady
state concentration is 0.63kmol/m3. The inlet concentration of the reactant is subjected to
step change of 0.6 kmol/m3. Calculate the concentration of the product at 0.5 min, 1 min
and 1.5 min.

2. a) What do you understand by offset? Derive the expression for offset for first order system 10
connected with proportional derivative controller.

b) What is transportation lag? Derive the transfer function for the same. 6

3 a) Develop the response equation for underdamped second order system, when step change 10
is initiated in input function.

b) A second order system is observed to exhibit an under damped response having the ultimate 6
value of response is 20, the minimum value of response is 14. If the value of damping
parameter are 0.6, 0.4, 0.2, and 0.1 show that as the damping coefficient decreases, the
system overshoot increases.

4. a) Explain the principle and working of pneumatic PID controller with the help of neat 10
labelled diagram. Derive the transfer function for the same.

b) Discuss the hysteresis of control valve. 6

5. a) What are the changes that would occur if analog controller is changed with direct digital 8
computer control? Explain with neat block diagram showing all the signal flows.

b) Explain the direct digital feedback control of extraction column with the help of neat 8
labelled diagram.

6. a) Discuss the characteristics of instruments in detail. 8

b) Explain the principle and working of McLeod gauge with the help of neat labelled diagram. 8

7. a) A thermometer is placed in a water bath kept at 50ºC and allowed to reach equilibrium. At 8
time t = 0, it is quickly transferred to another bath kept at 60ºC, kept there for 8 seconds and
returned to the bath at 50ºC. What will be the thermometer readings 5 seconds after it is
returned to the bath at 50ºC? The time constant is 10 seconds.
