Are we in the danger of losing the art of conversation?

The internet brings a lot of benefits to us, especially in the field of communication. As the same
knife cuts bread and fingers, internet do brings benefits to us but there is also downsides. Everyone
starts to communicate through the internet and there is lesser face-to-face communication among
people. It is common now to see people sitting at the table playing with their phone without even
talking a single word with their family and friends. It is obvious that the internet had bring a lot of
changes to our life especially in the art of conversation.

Social media is widely use nowadays. It plays an important role in communication. People use
them to stay in touch with each other. However, it brings large impact when people misuse them. In
our society, we could see each and every people no matter at what age holding a phone, texting or
watching video everywhere at any time. Although a group of friends and family are sitting together,
there is no contact among them. The only thing there are busy are texting and chit-chatting with
people on the other side of the phone. Social media did help us to keep in touch but they helped us
to keep in touch with people far away from us but not people about us.

Texting is the most common way for us to communicate with others using the social media. We
tend to type as fast as we can when we text with others as we wanted to save time. In fact, short
terms and acronyms are starting to be widely used. We tend to use acronyms to represent a word.
Like “tbh” for to be honest, “ASAP” for as soon as possible and etc. Some of these acronyms are
unofficial and they cause a lot of misunderstanding. While some of the students nowadays were
getting used to these acronym, they use them in their school works. This actually leave a bad
impression in the English language for children who are used to the acronyms.

When texting became more and more common, face-to-face communication seems to be an
awkward thing to do. Most of us feel more comfortable when we talk through texting each other.
There is no eye contact nor body language when we chat through social media and thus we tend to
feel more comfortable. So when it comes to face-to-face, we feel shy and very uncomfortable. This
had become a common problem for teenagers. It is difficult for them to talk to someone although
they know each other very well and they chit-chat with each other very much on the social media.
This shows how the art of conversation is being affected by the social media.

In a nutshell, it is so evident that we are losing the art of conversation. Conserving the art of
conversation is indeed important as it helps us a lot in our life. There is no point to just keep on
texting on the phone. A good conversation skill is important for us to improve our relationship
between family and friends and it often helps us in our studies and jobs.
