Compact Nodes
90070 and 90071

Dedicated Optimized Nodes

The 90070 receiver node is designed for long distance trunk
applications to feed architectures of any density. Dual output
with enhanced intermodulation performance and flatness
enables operators to cascade more amplifiers at the end of
the system.

The 90071 distribution node is ideally suited for system

upgrades to help operators push fiber deeper into the network
to increase bandwidth in support of interactive applications.
The node is developed to serve at different levels and tasks in
a HFC-network and can be connected directly to the
subscriber’s tap network. One or two end-of-line amplifiers
(line extenders) may be cascaded after the node. The dual node features two high-level distribution outputs.

Redundant Optical Input

Both nodes can be equipped with a second optical input receiver module. Configured for redundancy, this
enables route diversity. In the event of fiber break, the signal will be routed through an alternative fiber path
(e.g. in a ring structure). This will improve the network´s uptime. The routing/switching operation will be
conducted automatically by the node itself and monitored by TNCS, Transmission Network Control System,
which is Scientific-Atlanta’s element management system.

TNCS, Transmission Network Control System

Both nodes can be remotely monitored and controlled by TNCS via the plug-in Compact Transponder option.
Which is available in a SMC version or in a HMS version. The fully frequency agile Compact Transponder
allows monitoring and control of a large number of parameters in the nodes. TNCS improves overall network
reliability and provides faster fault detection.

Reverse Switch Ingress Locating Support

The nodes have a unique support tool for locating ingress sources; a 3-State Reverse Switch in each
individual node output. The switch is remotely controlled via TNCS. By switching the individual switches to
detection mode, it can be observed from which output the ingress derives. Then, the decision to switch off this
part totally may be taken.

Automatic Level Control

The nodes feature an automatic microprocessor controlled output level control. This ensures a constant
output level independently of changing optical input levels e.g. by redundant switching, additional fiber splices,
and other fiber handling that affects the attenuation. Unlike conventional designs, this automatic level control
operates without pilot tones.

Features
· 862 MHz node platform optimized for trunk or distribution applications to feed architectures of any density
· Full two-way communication
· Redundancy for the forward and/or reverse path
· Reverse path segmentation
· Optional status monitoring and control for enhanced reliability

Description, cont´d
Reverse Segmentation or Redundancy
Both nodes allows reverse path segmentation which makes it possible to increase the capacity in the reverse
path. Reverse segmentation means that both output ports have their own individual reverse transmitter. In the
end this means fewer subscribers per output and more reverse capacity per subscriber. This could be very
important e.g. in the event of many Internet subscribers. Alternatively, the second reverse transmitter may be
used as redundant transmitter in the event of a fiber break in one of the reverse fibers. This feature is
controlled via TNCS. Finally, if one of the reverse transmitters should fail itself, the full load will automatically
(if set up) be switched to the other transmitter to obtain continuous operation.

Standard delivery set up for the nodes is full load to both transmitters and 0 dB switch attenuation. This set up
may be changed remotely via TNCS or locally with the Handheld Programmer Terminal 91200.

Dual Ingress Filter

Both nodes are equipped with a socket designed to a plug-in Dual Ingress High Pass Filter if this proves
necessary on specific node locations. If no filter is required, the socket is just left open.

Compact Design
Developed in a compact design, the nodes are mounted outdoor in pedestal or mounting cabinets. They
can also be mounted indoor without cabinets. All fiber and coaxial cable entries are on the base of the
housing for easy connection, typically for underground cabling.

Reverse Signal Injection

If insertion of a reverse signal is needed, this can be done from one of the node’s output ports. A plug-in link
type 74099 is mounted instead of a diplex filter, and the reverse signal to insert is connected to the output
port. The port used for reverse insertion cannot be used for simultaneous forward (downstream) transmission.

The advantage of inserting a reverse signal as described is that the entire reverse frequency range
5-200 MHz of the reverse transmitter may be utilized.
