Carol Look - The Vibration Of Exceptional Health:

Managing Pain with Tapping

Welcome to the Tapping World Summit 2011. This is your host, Jessica Ortner. By
listening to this interview, you agree to the terms located at
http://www.thetappingworldsummit.com/disclaimer. We hope this interview helps you
become a healthier and a happier you.

Tapping has become so popular, in part because of the extraordinary results people are
getting around pain relief. If you have suffered from any kind of pain, from minor aches and
pains to debilitating chronic pain, then take out a pen and paper. Because what you’re
about to learn can change your life.

We’ll be speaking to Carol Look from http://attractingabundance.com

Carol is the author of the popular book, Attracting Abundance with EFT. She is a success
and abundance coach in the energy psychology field. And before becoming an EFT
master, she was trained in numerous energy psychology methods. Carol was also trained
as a clinical social worker and earned her Doctoral degree in clinical hypnotherapy.

For over a decade, she has been a teacher and leading voice in the world-wide tapping
community and I am so happy to have her with us.

Welcome, Carol.

Carol Look: Hi Jessica.

Jessica Ortner: Carol, before we start, I need to thank you for having me because here
we are in your office in New York City.

Carol Look: Good. We get to do this in person.

Jessica Ortner: It makes it so much more fun. So Carol, in this session, we’ll be
showing people how to have real results with pain relief. But you’re not a doctor, so
how does that work?

Carol Look: It’s a great point to start with for everyone listening. I’m not a medical
doctor and we advise that you consult your physician before you do any new
program for pain relief or any symptoms. But what I’m allowed to do with my
degrees is to treat emotional conflicts and emotional hurt and pain and anger and
guilt that have contributed to pain and illness.

So when I have clients or do workshops, the agreement and what I talk to them
about is… I say, You do realize that emotions carry energy? and they say, Yes. And
you realize that the energy that’s conflicted eventually gets concretized in the body
or shows up as a symptom. Everybody in this day and age understands that.
Troubles we’ve had from our past can show up physically. They manifest physically
eventually.

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

Jessica Ortner: Mmmm.

Carol Look: So that’s the agreement I have with my clients and workshop
participants is that if we can agree that emotions can contribute to pain and
symptoms, then that’s where we go and that’s where we work with the tapping –
which is really successful.

Jessica Ortner: Right. Well, can you give us an example of an emotion that can
contribute to someone’s pain?

Carol Look: Sure. I would say all of them can contribute, but here’s an example. I
worked with someone who had a car accident. So she had actual structural damage
in her shoulder and her arm, and that’s real and the x-ray shows that. But when we
use tapping, we tapped on the guilt because she had forgotten to put her blinker on,
and the anger – she was mad at the other driver because he had taken the turn too
quickly - so not only did she have structural damage, what helped relieve a lot of it
and increase her range of motion was working on the guilt and the anger. And she
was really surprised.

She said, We’re just tapping on my anger. Why would that change my shoulder and
my arm? Because not only did she have a physical accident, but she had emotions
before, during, and after the accident.

So sometimes people are emotionally stressed out and that causes them to have an
accident because they’re not paying attention. So then they have to work on that.

Other times, people are… they go through a really trying time before their diagnosis.
And I say to them, What was happening during that year before you were diagnosed
with …? You know, fibromyalgia, or some kind of arthritis or whatever… And they
say, Ooh, it was a really bad time. And they understand that their emotions played
some part in the diagnosis.

Jessica Ortner: Wow. That’s an incredible example because when we think of a car
accident, we think, Well, it’s just the impact. But we see so much more goes into it.
And how unbelievable that her – literally her range of motion changed. That’s great,
because that’s actually measurable. So that’s really great to hear.

Carol, how do you view what pain really is?

Carol Look: Pain is fabulous. We just – it doesn't feel good, but it’s fabulous
because it’s a message and it’s a signal from our bodies. Our body is saying,
You’ve pushed me too much. You’ve pulled me too much. You’ve stretched me too
much. Or restricted too much circulation… Or you haven’t been taking care of me in
some way and please pay attention.

So pain is actually – I help people view pain as a good symptom because it’s this
messenger that carries all this information that we really need to hear. So pain is a

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

signal. It’s information. It’s the body really talking to us. And it is really smart for us
to listen to our pain. And if we don’t, you know what happens. It gets louder or it
gets more complicated.

If we ignore a painful symptom, and again that’s why we always recommend that
people go to their physician if they’re in pain so they get a proper diagnosis. If you
ignore it, it’s going to get worse. That’s what happens with the physiology of the
human body. It gets worse.

Jessica Ortner: Right. You do a lot of work around stress relief and its relationship with
pain. Can you tell us why it’s a topic that you’re personally really passionate about?

Carol Look: Well, I’ve just had a number of experiences myself where I’ve let stress
get out of control and it resulted in something physical. My favorite story is: When I
first started doing tapping, 14 – 15 years ago, I had terrible insomnia, and I’d had it
for a long time. And when I used the tapping, my insomnia went away. And I’m
talking about long-term, chronic insomnia. And as a result of the tapping on basic
anxiety, I have now been sleeping really well for 14 – 15 years. And it was a direct
result of the stress in my life.

Other times… I had a tumor one time, and I know it was directly related to grief in my
life when someone very close to me died and I ended up with a tumor in my hand.
So I have just been able to track it in my own life as well as with my clients and
friends and workshop participants that stress has an effect on every cell in our body.
And if we don’t watch it, our body’s going to start getting our attention.

Jessica Ortner: Mm-hmm. Yes. And can you tell us a little bit more about how stress
impacts our body and even what happens to our immune system over time when
we’re constantly feeling stressed.

Carol Look: Well here’s how I put it: It’s that your immune system basically gets
drained. So your immune system has just so much strength and tolerance in it and if
you beat it… you know, if you really beat it up, year after year, your immune system
doesn't have the resilience, elasticity… it doesn't have what it needs to protect you.

So basically, how much can we handle? And you know when we’re under stress,
you know, we can get exposed to colds and the flu hundreds of times a year, but the
ones I get are when I’m stressed out and my immune system is down. I’m in a down
place.

So our immune system is very, very strong. Everyone has a very strong immune
system, but over the years, we kind of pummel it and expect it to take a whole lot of
stress, and not sleeping well and not eating well and emotional conflicts… and then
what happens over time is it gets drained – like a bank account, so it’s like your
savings account – and you don’t have that much left – so then you’re more
vulnerable to the germs that are out there. It’s not about what germs you bump into,
it’s about which ones you are what they call sometimes they say, are you a favorable

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

host to germs. You’re a favorable host and germs take advantage of you when
you’re really stressed and down… when your immune system is really turned down.

Jessica Ortner: Right. This conversation around pain is so important to have because
so many people struggle with it. Why do you think there are just so many people
who have this challenge around pain?

Carol Look: You know, I didn’t learn about it. I didn’t learn about the immune
system in school or in college, or even grad school… And I think a lot of us are
ignorant about this connection. It’s not our fault. We haven’t been taught it. So I
think for starters, we don’t know better. We don’t know that if we really party too
much and don’t take care of ourselves when we’re in our teens or our twenties, we
don’t know what damage that does to us.

The other thing besides just the information that I think a lot of people, I mean you
probably didn’t learn that much about it… The other thing is that we lose touch with
our bodies. So we’re very busy. We have jobs. We have social lives. We have our
families. And we end up ignoring or just not listening to the signals that our body is
giving out to us. So then what happens over months, years, decades… we end up
with a symptom or we have an accident or we end up with a diagnosis because of
long-term, chronic not listening.

Now, human beings are going to get illnesses. We all do. That is not up for
question. It’s whether we can reduce the symptoms and reduce the severity or the
length of time that we have these illnesses.

Jessica Ortner: That makes sense. So Carol, let’s dive into this. When someone
wants to begin to get in touch with their body - to have that conversation – what can
they do?

Carol Look: So as my premise is that many people are out of touch, myself
included – when I go through very stressful times, I find that I’m not as connected to
my body. What you can do that’s a very easy thing – and everyone listening, please
do this. You can put your hand on the area that hurts.

So whether you have a headache or a stomachache or you have neck pain or

something in your knees or ankles. Put your hand there, or even if you have a skin
diagnosis – put your hand on the area that’s inflamed and you start talking – you
start getting back in touch by saying – let’s say you put your hand on your lower
back.

Then you would say, Hello lower back. I’m listening now. And immediately you are
communicating and opening up the channels with your body parts and your whole
body and your cells and you’re saying, What do you need?

© 2011 Tapping World Summit Page 4 of 18

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

So maybe you would say, Hi, I’m here. I’m listening. What do you need? What
have I been neglecting? And then give yourself a few moments of silence to hear
your body respond.

Our bodies talk whether we hear sounds or whether we get an image or whether we
just know what our body is… how it’s responding to us. We get information. But you
can’t get the information if you’re on the computer all day long or on the telephone.
You’ve got to reconnect.

So just the act of taking time and saying, Body, I respect you and I’m going to listen
to you. Right there is a start. If everybody on this call just said they would put aside
time every day… five minutes… to say I’m going to listen to my body. Things would
start to change for the better.

Jessica Ortner: Right. I mean, for many, the concept of having an actual conversation
with their body seems a little weird and crazy and out there, but you were bringing
up some really good points – that we’re not listening and the body has so much
wisdom and clarity to give us. So that is so interesting.

Carol, when someone begins to have that conversation and they want to begin
tapping to address the pain, what do they focus on first? Do they focus on the
physical symptom or do they focus on the emotional one?

Carol Look: It’s really your choice. I have found more success with pain relief and
symptom relief when you focus on the emotional issues that might be contributing.

And sometimes what we do – is we put a hand on the area and we ask what
emotional conflict or what event in your life is showing up as this pain now? And
people go, Oh, that’s weird. That’s very strange, but I think the time I got fired from
my job is showing up in my back. So if you continue to ask the person or ask
yourself, you can go that direction with emotions.

If you can’t come up with any emotions that you think might be connected, then start
with the symptom. So for example, we would tap on the karate chop point and say –
with an emotion, we would say, Even though I’m holding on to this emotion in my
back, I deeply and completely accept myself. Or, Even though I’m holding on to this
anger or guilt – name the emotion. Or, you could just say – if your focused on just
the symptom, you could say, Even though my knee is hot with pain and throbbing
right now, I deeply and completely accept myself.

So those are the two main areas to go through to get to the pain. You can do either
one, but I hope that people eventually get to the emotional part.

Jessica Ortner: Okay. So then what are some questions that we can ask ourselves to
gain clarity on what the emotion might be?

© 2011 Tapping World Summit Page 5 of 18

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

Carol Look: Again, connect to your body. And sometimes what I ask people to do
is just say emotions out loud and see if they get a yes or a no as an insight.

So you might put your hand – let’s say you have a headache or you have migraine
syndromes. So then you put your hand on your head and you would say, I wonder if
guilt is connected to my headaches. And just wait. Does that seem true? Then you
might say, It’s anger that’s connected to my headaches. And wait for an answer.
It’s betrayal. So you mention a lot of the feelings and see if you get a spike or that
kind of charge that we work on when we measure the charge of a pain.

Jessica Ortner: Right… Right…

Carol Look: So you get connected to the body again and just throw out some
questions. You know, maybe… Is it anger that’s connected? Is it hurt? Is it
abandonment that’s connected to my _____________________________ and you
fill in the blank.

Jessica Ortner: Mm-hmm. What would you say to someone who feels like they aren’t
quite sure whether they have the right answer? I mean… this concept of talking to
your body and communicating is so new to them that they’re not quite sure whether
the memory that they’re thinking of is the right memory?

Carol Look: Well, I would say again, get quiet. Be peaceful and connect to your
body and then trust the answers. If a memory comes to you from five years ago, ten
years ago of something that was upsetting, there’s a reason your mind brought it
forward. So go ahead and tap on it. So that becomes your tapping target.

Jessica Ortner: Mm-hmm

Carol Look: So… Even though the boss yelled at me three years ago and I never
got over it, I deeply and completely accept myself. Or, Even though when the boss
was mad at me it’s now showing up in my stomach problems…

So assume that if your mind gave it to you, you need to work on it. And it becomes
a target.

Jessica Ortner: Mm-hmm. Now what happens if you’re working on something and
another memory comes to mind or you feel like the emotion has changed, say from
anger to sadness?

Carol Look: If you start with an anger issue and the sadness comes up really
strongly, the anger probably isn’t going to keep your attention. So you have two
options: You can either stick with the anger until it’s very close to a zero on that 0 to
10 point scale; Or, if the secondary emotion comes in is very overwhelming, I move
to that.

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

Jessica Ortner: Great. Carol, so are there any other questions that we can ask
ourselves to gain clarity?

Carol Look: Right. So you connect to your body. You ask what have you been
neglecting. What emotion might be there? Right? And then you can say, What is
that pain… let’s say you’re working with pain… What does your pain remind you of?
What does the symptom remind you of? How do you feel emotionally because of
that symptom?

So I had a client who – I asked her what it felt like emotionally when she had this
problem with her back and her knees. It was all connected. And she said, Well, it
makes me feel weak and powerless. And I said, When else in your life have you felt
weak and powerless? And she immediately connected it to an ex-husband. But
that’s how you make this link. You make this bridge between the body and the mind.
So keep trying to make those connections.

Jessica Ortner : Okay. So, staying on this topic of emotions, I want to ask about
limiting beliefs – because we know that really creates some very strong emotions.
So how do limiting beliefs impact our health?

Carol Look: Usually, we get beliefs about our health from our families or from
society. So sure we have the DNA, but if you believe that all people in your family
will develop some kind of arthritis, that’s very, very powerful. If you believe that no
one in your family ever gets well, then you’re going to run that program – it’s almost
like running a pattern of belief and then you can do damage to your structure and to
your immune system and to your thoughts. We know that. But if our thoughts are
low and always focused on an illness, guess what? It does show up after years and
years. So limiting beliefs are really how we stop ourselves from being completely
well.

Jessica Ortner: Can you give us an example of how we could tap on limiting beliefs…
what that looks like?

Carol Look: Sure. Let’s say that you believe that you’re going to get arthritis
because everyone in your family has it. Then we would do: Even though I’m
convinced that I’m going to get the same disease as my family members, I choose to
feel calm and peaceful. So you know what we do with the tapping, with EFT, we just
tell the truth. What’s the truth? You’re convinced you’re going to get the migraine
headaches because your mother had them or whatever.

So, just tell the truth. That becomes your target to tap on, Even though I have a
limiting belief that as I get older I have to decline with age, I accept who I am and
appreciate my bodily strength.

Jessica Ortner: So why did you decide to use “I choose” instead of what traditionally
people use: “I love and accept myself?”

© 2011 Tapping World Summit Page 7 of 18

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

Carol Look: You can do both. I love using I choose statements with the body. It
feels very proactive and empowering. But you can do either way. If you prefer, I
deeply and completely accept myself, make sure you say, I deeply and completely
accept myself and my body. Because we often get feelings of having been
betrayed when our bodies hurt or as we age and we start to get an illness. We often
can feel like our bodies have let us down and then we’re mad at our body – and we
must integrate those feelings vibrationally and just say, Even though my body hurts,
I accept who I am anyway and I accept my body.

Jessica Ortner: And then I’m going to ask this question. I ask it in every interview,
because people are always wondering, how do I know if I’m saying the right thing?
So once they do the setup statement and they begin to tap, how do you know? How
do you know that you’re doing it right?

Carol Look: You tell the truth. So if you were going to call your best friend and say
– this is what’s going on in my body, what would you say? You don’t make it up.
You don’t say something that the doctor would say. You say your own words
connected to your ailment. And you just say the truth. Even though I feel
discouraged and I don’t think anything is going to work for me, I accept who I am
and I accept my whole body.

To accept your whole body when it’s in pain is critical. And people don’t want to
accept their body when it’s in pain because they’re mad at it. But use that energy of
acceptance and that vibration to just say, I love it anyway. I accept it anyway.

Another phrasing that we could do that I love using is sending love to that body
part… Even though my back is throbbing and hurting right now, I choose to send
love to that area of my body. Really powerful.

Jessica Ortner: Now what do you say to someone who – when they begin to do the
actual tapping on the face points, they’re tempted to stick with just positive sayings,
like sending it love… sending it healing?

Carol Look: I like to focus on the issue or the conflict first so you’re really
addressing that honestly. So you would tap on the face and say, I’ve got this pain in
my back. My back (or shoulders are) really throbbing. I feel really tight. I feel the
pinched nerve. I recommend that people address the real issue first before they go
into the positive. You can still send love every minute you get, but acknowledge.
You know, human beings need to be acknowledged. Well guess what? Our bodies
need to be acknowledged.

Jessica Ortner: Brilliant. Well, Carol, I want to ask you about a few different topics.
Let’s start with safety. How does safety show up? How does it relate to pain?

Carol Look: Safety shows up in all areas of our lives. If we don’t feel safe, making
the change that we want to make – we’re going to move heaven and earth to block it

© 2011 Tapping World Summit Page 8 of 18

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

and to sabotage. So if you don’t feel safe with a fully healthy body for whatever
reason, then you’re going to do something to block it.

So I recommend saying to yourself and asking the question, What’s the downside to
completely healing from this… illness, ailment, insomnia, skin problem (whatever it
is)? What’s the downside to healing? Is there any part of you that doesn’t feel safe
getting over it? Is it serving you in any way to have this problem? Our ailments and
illnesses and whatever we get… they tend to serve us in some way, even if it looks a
little backwards because we want to be well. Sometimes we get something out of it.

Jessica Ortner: Can you give us an example, because some people might be thinking:
How can there possibly be a downside to actually feeling good?

Carol Look: Right. Many people won’t have a downside. But, what you want to
look for is the secondary gains or At least I get time off. I had a client who said the
only time people left her alone was when she was ill. She had an exacerbation of an
illness that would only come every couple of months. And she started to understand
for her – that she needed to bring on symptoms - she made her symptoms worse
psychologically and emotionally and physically so that she could get a break. And
that’s just a small example.

There will be many people listening who don’t have secondary gains – who don’t –
and please, I don’t want anyone to hear that as judgmental or hurtful. We all have
complicated lives and bodies, and sometimes we get a cold, so we go to bed for 3
days. Sometimes we do, sometimes we don’t. But…

Jessica Ortner: Hey, I’m guilty of that.

Carol Look: So the safety issue is really important and the tapping phrase that
would be useful: Even though it doesn't feel safe for me to release this pain and
illness, I accept myself and my body anyway.

Then a second piece of safety… Think about anybody in your life that might be
threatened if you became completely well. Is there someone whose job it is to take
care of you and they may not feel so great if you get over all the symptoms?

What’s it going to do to your mind if you have a miracle in physical healing? That
actually can be threatening to us. Believe it or not. A spontaneous healing when
we’re not used to them and we have to explain it to our friends, it’s a little strange.
So there are lots of things that could get in the way of our having a full healing, and
we end up sabotaging a little bit here and there.

Jessica Ortner: Hmm. Next, I’d love to hear about identity and identity issues – how
that plays a role.

Carol Look: If you’ve been ill or in pain for a long time, you develop your identity
connected to that as well. So if someone says, How are you, Jess today? And you
© 2011 Tapping World Summit Page 9 of 18
Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

say, Okay. And then I say, And how are the knees today? I’m having a bad week.
It becomes part of your dialogue… part of how you relate to people. So we want to
make sure to have complete healing, we want to make sure that you can say to
yourself, Who will I be if I get well, and will I like who I am if I get well? What will
happen to me if I get over it? Same thing happens with weight loss with people
where they say – if they’ve been overweight for 25 years, who are they going to be?
It affects your sense of identity.

Jessica Ortner: Hmmm.

Carol Look: Right? So… Even though I’m afraid of who I might be without my
pain… If you’ve had pain for 5 years, 10 years, just look at any insight you might get
to identity issues, and if it doesn’t relate to you, that’s fine, but it’s the same thing
with any field.

Jessica Ortner: Right. And it’s all about asking ourselves these questions and to see
what comes up.

Carol Look: Yes.

Jessica Ortner: Fantastic. Well, Carol, you’re going to share with us a four-part plan
on how to address pain. This is all about action and getting results.

So let’s start with the very first step.

Carol Look: Number 1 is daily stress management. I really believe that if we can
take the edge off that stress that happens to us every day, we will build stronger
bodies and we’ll be able to handle the normal stresses and strains of life. I mean,
life’s not going to be easy. No one promised us that, but if we’re strong and feeling
good and not tossing and turning at night because of what happened at work or what
happened with your teenager, then we really feel empowered and can feel better.

So shall we do a little tapping on that?

Jessica Ortner: Yes, please. So the listener and I will repeat after you and tap.

Carol Look: Okay. Let’s say… so we start on the karate chop point – let’s say
you’re focused on stress - something that happened about a work project or with a
boss or with a co-worker – and we’ll say that you feel it showing up in your back – as
pain or stress or strain. So let’s address that.

KARATE CHOP POINT:

Even though the stress from work today has been showing up in my back,
I deeply and profoundly accept myself anyway.

Even though I noticed that my work stress has been showing up in my back pain,
© 2011 Tapping World Summit Page 10 of 18
Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

And I might be a little mad at my boss,

I choose to feel calm and relaxed.

Even though the stress from work today has been showing up in my back,
I deeply and profoundly accept me and my body.

EB: I’ve been letting the stress from work show up in my body.
SE: All that stress from work
UE: It’s hard to let it go
UN: The stress from work is in my body
CP: and I want to let it go.
CB: I’ve been letting the work stress show up in my body.
UA: But I want to let it go.
TH: I’ve been letting stress from work
Show up in my body.

So there’s an example of addressing the truth. And now we go to a positive round.

That’s how I like to do it.

So then go back to the eyebrow…

EB: I choose to release all that work stress.

SE: I choose to feel strong and healthy.
UE: I know how strong my body is.
UN: Even though the stress has been showing up in my back,
CP: I choose to release it now.
CB: I’m giving it back to work
UA: and I’m acknowledging and honoring my body
TH: And I appreciate how healthy and well I do feel.

Good.

Jessica Ortner: Carol, very quick question. If someone begins to tap and the pain
actually increases, what does that mean?

Carol Look: It usually means you’ve hit the nail on the head – that you are now
focused on the real problem. So it’s actually a good sign. I know it can scare some
people, but it’s a good sign. Keep tapping on the emotion you mentioned, the stress
you mentioned… maybe there’s a person – when you reconnect to your body
sometimes you say, Who’s been stored in my body? Who’s there?

So it’s a good sign, even though it’s uncomfortable and we always recommend keep
tapping.

Jessica Ortner: Alright. Keep tapping. So let’s move on to Step 2.

© 2011 Tapping World Summit Page 11 of 18

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

Carol Look: Step 1 is daily stress management – whether it’s your kids or life, or
your job, or your house or whatever’s going on.

Step 2 is clearing traumas from the past that get stored in your body.

Now we know this from some very famous neurologists out there and doctors who
are working with trauma – we know that old trauma gets stored in the body and it
needs to be released. And if it isn’t released, eventually, it builds up and you get a
symptom. We pop a symptom. That’s what happens. So if we can choose a
trauma. Now trauma, big T, little T, it doesn't have to be the biggest one in your life,
but maybe you got fired three years ago and it still bothers you. Maybe there was a
relationship breakup six years ago and it still bothers you. Maybe there is something
that you’d like to work on from childhood that still bothers you and you pretty much
know it’s stored in your body.

Now here’s an example of if this seems like waters that are too deep for you, please
contact a practitioner to help you navigate through this kind of an issue.

Jessica Ortner: Okay. Alright, so why don’t we dive into the tapping?

Carol Look: Okay. So let’s say there was an event - I’m just going to pick a year –
what 2000?

Jessica Ortner: Okay.

Carol Look: An event from 2000, we’ll say it in global language so everyone
tapping can use that. Change the year. Change the topic if you want. And we’ll go
like this:

KARATE CHOP POINT:

Even though that event from the year 2000 has been stored in my
______________________ (what do you want to say?) [We’ll say knees] –

Even though that event from 2000 has been stored in my knees,
And I didn’t know that’s where it was lodged,
I deeply and profoundly accept all of me
And my body.

Even though I’ve been storing that stressful event from 2000 in my knees,
I accept who I am and my body.

Even though that trauma from back then

Has been stored in my knees
I accept who I am and how my body is processing.

© 2011 Tapping World Summit Page 12 of 18

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

[Now two points, very important: you can be very vague – you can say, Even though
that traumatic event – you can do that over and over again and your mind will help
you come up with what needs to be worked on… and you can say has been stored
somewhere in my body – if you don’t have a pain right now or an ailment or a
symptom right now, that’s a good thing to do.

So then we move to the eyebrow…]

EB: That traumatic event has been stored in my body.

SE: and I appreciate my body for taking care of it.
UE: That traumatic event has been stored in my body.
UN: My poor body.
CP: That was a very upsetting event.
CB: I remember it, and my body remembers it.
UA: That traumatic event was really upsetting.
TH: I didn’t know that my body was remembering it.

Good. Take a deep breath.

Then we’ll go back. Now with something like that, I would do one more round on the
trauma itself. And then if you feel like it, then go ahead with some positive words.
But let’s do a little more. Go back to the eyebrow.

EB: I’ve been storing a traumatic event in my body.

SE: Because I didn’t have time to discuss it.
UE: I wasn’t given the space to address it.
UN: So the event ended up in my body.
CP: And that’s natural.
CB: I appreciate my body
UA: for trying to store this trauma
TH: But I think I’m ready to let go of some of it.

EB: I choose to let go of some of that guilt.

SE: I choose to let go of some of that hurt.
UE: and all that terror around the trauma
UN: I choose to let go.
CP: I can handle it now.
CB: I can process it now.
UA: And I appreciate my body for holding on to it.
TH: I appreciate who I am, and I choose to let go of some of it now.

Good. Take a deep breath.

What we know is that trauma gets frozen in the energetic part of our body, and if it
doesn't get discharged, it stays put. And that’s why so much PTSD work is done
with the tapping and trauma release. You’ve got to release the original hit to your
body.

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

Jessica Ortner: That makes a lot of sense.

Carol Look: Right.

Jessica Ortner: So Carol, let’s move on to Step 3.

Carol Look: Step 3 is the fear and anxiety that we all have about our future.
Imagine how that drains your immune system, and then over time can make you feel
weakened or vulnerable to germs or vulnerable to getting some kind of illness.

So let’s say your anxiety – think of something in the future that makes you feel
anxious – again about your family, your job, your health – think about that. Even
people with illnesses have a lot of anxiety about what their future will look like if they
don’t release some of the symptoms.

So think about that anxiety and rate it 0 to 10. I should have asked you to rate each
of the others – also – the stress from the day and the trauma. So rate it 0 to 10 and
then hopefully we will watch it as usual go down.

Jessica Ortner: Okay.

Carol Look: Okay? So lets say our topic – our target for tapping is the anxiety I
have about my future. So when you say that out loud, rate it from 0 to 10, how high
is it? Then we go to the karate chop point as usual.

KARATE CHOP POINT:

Even though I have all this anxiety about my future,

And it makes me exhausted,
I deeply and profoundly accept who I am.

Even though my anxiety about the future makes me tired,

I accept who I am and how I feel.

Even though I have a lot of fear and anxiety about my future,

I choose to feel calm and relaxed.

EB: My anxiety about the future makes me tired.

SE: I have so much fear and anxiety about the future.
UE: so much fear and anxiety…
UN: and it ends up in my body.
CP: My fear and anxiety of the future
CB: end up stored in my body.
UA: All this fear and anxiety
TH: My fear and anxiety about my future.
Show up in my body.

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

EB: What if I could release some of the fear?

SE: What if I could release some of the anxiety?
UE: I love being grateful for what I have
UN: I love being grateful for my now.
CP: I don’t know what my future’s going to look like.
CB: I choose to feel calm.
UA: I choose to feel peaceful.
TH: I choose to feel calm
Even though I don’t know what my future’s going to look like.

Good. Then take a deep breath.

Good. And again, that may be one you do every day.

Number 1 – daily stress management and the fear about the future – most of us
suffer a great deal from both of those.

Jessica Ortner: Right. Well that’s what I’d like to ask you – if someone is learning
these tips, I know we still are going to learn step 4, but how do we implement this
into our lives, and how long does it take for us to start seeing results?

Carol Look: Well, the implementation – I say to people: Have you set a time today
for your tapping? And if they say no, I know it’s never going to be done.

So you need to make a plan. Do you tap five minutes, three times a day? Do you
tap 10 minutes on your way to bed? If you don’t put it into your schedule, it’s going
to fall off.

Jessica Ortner: Can you get results by tapping for 10 minutes a day?

Carol Look: Oh, absolutely. I’ve seen wonderful results with tapping five minutes a
day. We recommend a little bit more. And remember you need to choose a target
and tap on the target and then keep checking, how is it doing? How are you doing
with that target?

Jessica Ortner: Only five minutes – I mean that’s what’s unbelievable about this. It’s
not like you have to go somewhere else, like going to the gym for an hour. This is
five minutes, 10 minutes… Fantastic.

Carol Look: So five or ten minutes on tapping on your stress from the day, you
know you’re going to sleep better.

Jessica Ortner: Right. So true.

Carol Look: You know you’re going to wake up more refreshed. You know you’re
going to approach your job the next day with a better and more level energy if you’ve

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

addressed that stress. So that’s about the implementation. Five, ten minutes once
or twice a day – that’s what I would say. And yes you can get results quite quickly
because what are we doing? We’re releasing the pent up energy that’s conflicted or
been stored in our body giving us – either draining our immune system and making
us susceptible to illness or it’s giving us actual symptoms. It’s giving us tightness in
the neck and a stomach problem and digestive issues and skin issues and all sorts
of stress – skin problems and break out problems and headaches.

Many, many illnesses need to have emotional conflict in order to manifest in our
lives.

Jessica Ortner: Right. That’s so fascinating. Well, Carol, we are on the final step, so
can you tell us about Step 4?

Carol Look: So Step 4 is for addressing your ongoing symptoms. So let’s say you
have fibromyalgia or let’s say you have a chronic rheumatoid arthritis – you take
your symptoms, specifically, and that becomes your target for the tapping.

Maybe you have headaches. Anything goes. Anything in the body – structural
damage – and many times people will say, But don’t you understand that the x-ray
says I have a problem? Yes. But if we, through the tapping, add energy and
circulation and energetic movement to that part of the body, you’re going to heal
faster. We already know that about sports medicine. Okay?

So addressing ongoing symptoms. Do you have a symptom you want to – not

yours, but just a symptom we could focus on?

Jessica Ortner: Well, let’s see… we’re going to do pain, so why don’t we do something
on neck pain?

Carol Look: Okay. So a lot of people store stress and tension from the day or from
their life in their neck. Okay? So again, everyone listening, measure it. 0 to 10.
How bad does it feel right now when you move your neck? Don’t hurt yourself. Just
measure it. And give it a number and then we’ll go tapping. So start at the karate
chop point.

KARATE CHOP POINT:

Even though I have this neck pain,

[And those of you listening, it can be more effective to really describe it. If yours
feels stabbing or sharp or dull or throbbing, that can be useful just to add specifics
and details. Karate chop: ]

Even though I have this throbbing neck pain,

I choose to accept who I am
And to accept my body.

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

Even though I have these ongoing symptoms,

And it shows up as neck pain,
I choose to feel calm and peaceful

Even though my neck pain is probably coming from someplace else,

I choose to send it love and compassion.

EB: My throbbing neck pain.

SE: I’m not sure what it’s from.
UE: I’m not sure if emotions have made it worse.
UN: This throbbing neck pain.
CP: My throbbing neck pain.
CB: I choose to accept my body
UA: and I choose to relax my body.
TH: I wonder if I relaxed my body,
If that would release some of the pain.

EB: I’m going to send love to my neck pain.

SE: I’m going to send my favorite color to my neck pain.
UE: I feel better already.
UN: I’m going to release a little bit of this symptom.
CP: because I feel safe enough to.
CB: I choose to release this ongoing symptom.
UA: and I relax my body and mind
TH: and I accept me and my body.
And I send love to my whole body.

Good. Take a deep breath.

So again, anyone listening, please change the words so they really suit you.
Change the symptom. Change the part of the body. But what we’ve got is a four
part plan.

1) Daily stress management

2) Traumas from the past that get stored in your body
3) Your fear or anxiety about the future
4) Addressing any ongoing symptoms that you might have from an illness or just
when you get uptight and stressed out.

Jessica Ortner: Right. And all this information is in the workbook in even more detail.
So make sure, everyone who’s listening, you use that as a resource.

Carol, when someone begins to start this journey of being very proactive and finally
looking at the emotions behind their body, do you find that there are any common
mistakes or troubles people have when they’re first starting?

© 2011 Tapping World Summit Page 17 of 18

Carol Look – Pain and Illness Continued

Carol Look: Well they start with a hatred or an anger at their body. And that
resistance will slow down the healing. So even if it’s really challenging, I
recommend people do a basic tapping on “Even though I am mad at my body or
disappointed or even though I feel let down by my body, I choose to appreciate it
anyway.”

It’s a really good start because we approach our bodies as – we’re cranky about it or
we’re upset because we feel betrayed sometimes. So that’s a really good starting
place.

Don’t start with – I mean if the hatred is true, go ahead and tap for that. But help
yourself move toward bodily appreciation and care.

Jessica Ortner: Mm-hmmm. When someone works and is using tapping and they find
that they’re getting results, do they have to continue with the tapping in order to keep
the results, or do you sometimes find that someone has a major shift and the pain
doesn’t go back? How does that work?

Carol Look: Many times – if the pain is really a result, an ending result after
decades of emotional trouble or trauma or conflict, often we find that it completely
disappears when they address the guilt, the hurt, the loss, maybe there was grief.
We often find that it goes away.

If your symptoms are as a result of being over stressed out in your life and not
saying no enough and not taking care of yourself, if you don’t deal with the daily
stress, the symptoms will recur. So we just always recommend – Continue to look at
ways to take care of yourself. Continue to look at ways to release the daily ongoing
stress that drains us and go from there. And really monitor your progress and see
what works. Play around with the words. Play around with putting your hand on the
body part that really bothers you. Play around with that. Make it fun. Make it really
interesting, fascinating that you’re going to now communicate with your body to get
the information you need to help yourself heal or at least feel better.

Jessica Ortner: Hmm. Tomorrow morning when people wake up and start their day, if
there was one thing that you want them to remember about this conversation, what
would it be?

Carol Look: Your body loves you and your body is trying to help you. So pay
attention. Listen to everything you hear, every little symptom. Pay attention. It’s
brilliant. Our bodies are brilliant beyond what we know.

Jessica Ortner: Well Carol, thank you so much for this brilliant conversation. I know it’s
going to help a lot of people. Thank you!

Carol Look: Thanks, Jessica.
