MODULE-I
1. a) Describe and explain the formation of Newton’s rings in reflected
monochromatic light with necessary theory. Explain why
Newton’s rings are circular 9
b) In Michelson’s interferometer 100 fringes cross the field of view
when the movable mirror is displaced through 0.02945 mm.
Calculate the wavelength of light used 3
OR
2. a) Define dispersive power of a grating and obtain an expression
for it 5
b) When a parallel bean of sodium light is incident on plane
transmission grating having 4250 lines per cm, a second order
spectral line is observed at an angle of 300 . Calculate the
wavelength of light 3
c) Define resolving power of plane diffraction grating and obtain
an expression for the resolving power of grating 4
MODULE -II

wave plates 4
c) Explain how Polaroid sunglasses help reduce glare due to
reflection 3
OR
4. a) What is a plane polarized light? How it can be produced? 4
b) Describe the construction and action of a Nicol prism 6
c) The thickness of a calcite plate to produce polarized light is
8.56x10-7 m. The principal refractive indices are, o = 1.658
